fABULOUS, YES, BUT DEFINTIVE? December 20, 2003 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is a truly wonderful compilation of probably the finest soul group of the 60s - and maybe, in their later incarnations, of the 70s - and an excellent companion to the first 'Definitive Impressions'CD. It is mainly drawn from B sides and LP tracks, but, because of the recent, and excellent, 'abc Rarities' CD there is nothing new to CD here. I would have loved to hear the version of 'can't you see' that is on the vinyl 'Greatest Hits volume 2' and havew a vague suspcion that there is a version of 'Emotions' that hasn't yet made it to CD. The 'Rarities' liner notes have made teasing references to an unreleased 'live' CD, (one track of which has made it onto an American cheapo vinyl release), and I hope that eventually the Versatile Impressions LP will be coupled with it for a 2 on 1 - although, again, the excellent 'rarities' has the best of that somewhat uneven volume. As a completist I await the 'lost' gems, is there nothing else 'in the can?' In the meantime I storngly recommend the compelling 2 on 1 Kent CD series of the American LPs to anyone entranced by what they find here. It is wonderful to see Curtis, Sam and Fred still the subject of releases more than 40 years after they began, and I am still entranced by their sweet soul harmonies, although neither I, nor my mohair suit, are what they were then.....
