ALSO ON THIS SET YOU WILL FIND SLIMS VERSION OF THE WESTERN SONG ,RED WING,AND THE VERY HARD TO FIND VERSION OF COOL WATER COMPLETE WITH STRINGS AND CHORUS ,THIS RECORDING HAS ELUDED MOST FANS FOR DECADES. THERE ARE MANY OTHER RARE SONGS AND RERECORDINGS THAT SLIM MADE IN THE 70s WHEN HE WAS ENJOYING A COMEBACK .IF YOU ARE A TRUE COLLECTOR OF SLIMS MUSIC YOU WILL ALREADY HAVE THE 2 BEAR FAMILY BOX SETS WHICH GIVE YOU ALL THE SINGLES AND ALBUMS HE MADE IN THE LATE 40s THROUGH TO THE LATE 60s SO THIS SET WILL BE A WELCOME ADDITION TO YOUR COLLECTION.
A great collection from a great performer November 25, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
"The Collection" is a welcome addition to the Whitman line up of cd's available. I particularly enjoyed some of the lesser known versions of Slim's songs. For example, the opening track Rose Marie, this version was recorded but never released and thanks to Paul Hazel, the albums compiler, is now available to Whitman fans. Many other great songs are included and I must say how good it is to be able to purchase on cd Slim's later uptempo version of When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again. There are also other songs included from the late 1970's which appear to be on cd now for the first time. This cd The Collection presents excellent value!!
Good value - but by no means representative of Slim's very best February 22, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
First, the good news. This 2-disc collection of 58 of some of the best-known songs from Slim's vast repertoire, totalling two and a half hours' playing time, is clearly good value at this price. He's in good voice, and any such compilation must be worth a 3-star rating. Now the not-so-good. In my view, this does not constitute a 'best of' collection by any means. There's a very nice booklet with the collection, with an overview of Slim' long career, and a good deal of interesting information about the great man, and you could easily get the impression that the older songs here, including 'Rose Marie', 'China Doll', 'Serenade' and 'Indian Love Call' for example, first recorded in his classic '50s heyday, are the actual recordings from that time (ie., the Imperial/London American versions). That is, until you hear the very first song on disc one, which happens to be 'Rose Marie'. Not so. All these songs are copyrighted by Capitol Records, and therefore include a number of re-recordings. Caveat emptor - 'the cave is empty'. With that in mind, you can make your choice. Unfortunately, and in my opinion, there doesn't seem to be a single - or even 2-disc - collection available that does represent Slim's very best from the classic years. And not everyone wants to go as far as buying the Bear Family set - excellent as it may be. Nevertheless, this is very good for what it is.
