Family sounds like a pivotal release for Rimes, who made her breakthrough as a childhood prodigy with an uncanny vocal resemblance to Patsy Cline, and then evolved into an eclectic diva who couldn't quite decide what she wanted to be when she grew up. She's all grown up now, as both the sensual "Upper Hand" and the spiritual "What I Cannot Change" attest. Rimes had a hand in writing all the material (except for the bonus-cut duets with Jon Bon Jovi and Reba McEntire), and themes of family--though not always her family--pervade the lyrics. Musically, this is grittier, harder-edged, and more propulsive than much of her previous fare, with the title cut and "Nothin' Better to Do" evoking the Southern country soul of Bobbie Gentry, her duet with Marc Broussard on "Nothing Wrong" riffing like the Rolling Stones, and "One Day Too Long" sounding like the female Otis Redding. She's lost none of her supple upper register, as the balladry of "Pretty Things" attests, but Leann Rimes in no longer just a pretty voice. --Don McLeese

I bought this CD having seen "Nothing better to do" on MTV and was not disappointed. It has a country rock feel with some fabulous ballads too. The duets with Marc Broussard and Bon Jovi are highlights along with the title track and the one that origanially caught my attention. Leanne's voice is strong and powerful and there is non of the mushiness that I had previously associated with her. A positive change of direction for Leanne and I will certainly be looking out for her next offering on the strength of this CD.
A gamble that paid off. March 27, 2008
When I first saw the lyrics and listened to the album, I wondered what I'd done but after the third listen I was hooked and for now it's the only album that seems to be playing at mine. Love it. It's upbeat and lively and has its sweet moments too.

LeAnn Rimes latest album is based on her personal life experiences, and although it may not be her best album, you have to give her marks not only for the sentiment, but for sharing songwriting duties on five of the tracks with her husband. First single "Nothin' Better to Do" is one these songs, and although it has a wonderfully upbeat chorus, it's unfortunate that I couldn't understand most of the lyrics.
The standout songs are the collaborations with Bon Jovi, Reba McEntire and Marc Broussard, but also check out "Fight", "Something I Can Feel", "I Want You With Me" and "Doesn't Everybody".
The vocals on some tracks are clearer than on others, and some songs are produced better than others, but all in all the album passes muster. It's a good Country album, just not a great one.

This new album is superb!. Leann has co-written 12 of the 14 tracks on this CD and they sound like they were written straight from the heart. Standout tracks include the slow, soulful "One Day Too Long", "What I Cannot Change" and the great first single "Nothin Better To Do". Also features excellent duets with Jon Bon Jovi and Reba McEntire. Probably the best album Leann Rimes has produced to date.

LeAnn Rimes' albums are usually been great - and also this time. This album is a country album, just like "Blue" and "This Woman". There's however some rock influences you can hear in the songs "Family" and "Upper Hand". Many many songs are amazing and I cannot find any bad songs in this album. My favourites are "Upper Hand", "Nothin' Better to Do", "Good Friend And a Glass of Wine", and "Something I Can Feel".
