Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Recorded in April, 2002 in Louisville, Kentucky, Alison Krauss + Union Station Live is, surprisingly, the sweet-voiced fiddler's first live album. Unsurprisingly, it's also a marvellous showcase of radio-friendly, popular contemporary bluegrass: Krauss' dreamy voice, the most gorgeous in all Country music, impeccably supported by some of the world's finest musicians. Bill Monroe-worshipping purists might prefer a more hard-driven sound, but with music as ravishing as this it seems churlish to complain about the odd missing mandolin.

With Krauss and co. still riding high after the crossover success of the Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, this two-disc live set features obligatory renditions of "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" (Dan Tyminski's showpiece) and the spine-tingling a cappella "Down to the River to Pray", here with Krauss' ethereal contralto harmonised by the men's voices. Elsewhere, much of the bestselling New Favorite album is performed, alongside a "greatest hits" selection of older material. Dobro genius Jerry Douglas takes a solo spot, but like the very best bluegrass this concert is a meeting of equals, and one not to be missed by any Country music fan. --Mark Walker

5 out of 5 stars How am I going to break this to my friends?   November 14, 2007

Now then, I must be going soft. After a lifetime (so far) of prog/rock/jazz and heavy classical consumption, the only time I would go near country was on a trip to the seaside.

For sure I've dabbled at the edge of the countryside, sometimes toying with getting an Emmylou Harris album - but never getting round to it (I have loved her Evangeline track on the Band's Last Waltz album for what seems like a hundred years or more) - not really knowing where to start. Back tracking is always tricky. Then I saw the film Walk the Line and marvelled at the vocal talents of Reese Witherspoon (yes, Reese Witherspoon) singing the country style of June Carter-Cash. I loved the way that spoon girl sang - she stirred me for sure! I also love the sound of a decent banjo - oft plucked beautiful on a few Sufjan Stevens tracks I know.

Then a month or so back I saw Leanne Rimes performing on TV from a few years ago - she looked and sounded like an angel and she was singing country. I was entranced but worried about getting old or becoming a trucker or something. Then a couple of weeks ago I saw and heard Ms Krauss performing and talking with Robert Plant about their new venture. Being a bit of a fan of the Plant down the years, I was intrigued by what he had to say about AK and how he had been taken in by her amazing voice. So I clicked a few buttons on Amazon.com, found this live double album with probably the dullest title and cover I've ever clapped eyes on and bought it on spec - for next to nothing.

Now hear me Lord. I can't stop playing it. It's been donkey's years since I've been knocked out by an album in this way. Tomorrow I shall trail on down to the courthouse an' pled ma guilt fer crymes against my ears. I denied `em and I'm willin' ta pay and I ain't gonna tell no-one I'm proud of it neither.

Seriously, the voices, particularly Ms Krauss's, the musicianship, the songs, the tightness of the band and the impeccable recording quality are astonishing. I don't know the difference between bluegrass and any other colour of turf, but I do know a 10 out of 5 album when I hear one - and this is one. All praise be to the good lord music for answering yet another prayer I never uttered. My only problem now is how am I going to break this to my friends?

4 out of 5 stars (Largely) fantastic   September 3, 2007

First came across AK duetting with Michelle Shocked, but it took her sublime version of Baby, Now That I've Found You to really open my ears. The version here surpasses even the studio version - one of the best live sounds I have heard.

Small gripes - hence the churlish docking of a star - despite being a fantastic band, I find the blokes' solo vocal pieces to be a bit skippable - I certainly wouldn't be buying a Union-Station-with-fiddle-player album. Alison plays well, but her voice is fantastic, and the songs she sings are made fairer yet by her delivery.

And the audience - rather essential to a live album, and generally respectful, but they spoil the first bars of several songs - why do audiences feel the need to let everyone know they recognise the song? Huh?

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding in every way   July 24, 2007

I bought this album based on a recommendation of its sound quality, and I was not disappointed. The recording quality is *superb* with no hint of any clipping or compression. Voices, instruments and the audience are all captured perfectly, and the top notch performance of Alison Krauss and Union Station makes this one of my all time favorite albums, for critical or casual listening. In fact, it's almost hard to believe this is a live album at all, if it wasn't for the audience you could believe it was laid down in the sudio.

I was going to mention my stand out tracks, but they all stand out for one reason or another. However, Alison's vocals on Oh Atlanta never fail to send shivers down my spine.

If you're a completist like me then the DVD of this show is also well worth trying to get ahold of, it doesn't have the encore from the CD, but has more continuity bewteen songs and extra banter between the band and audience.

I would happily and confidently recommend this album to anyone who enjoys well recorded music, even if country/bluegrass is not usually your thing.

5 out of 5 stars Great atmosphere   July 1, 2007
New to Alison Krauss. Would classify myself as willing to try different genre (mostly classical, pop, new age, some blues and jazz and occ rock). I had no idea what I was letting myself in for. Totally blown away by her vocals, and the fiddle works.....Will certainly try out other bluegrass music after this
