Solid, Underappreciated Album September 15, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Roy's first album for MGM was solid, but much underappreciated. Following his success with "Oh, Pretty Woman," Roy left Monument records where he had had so many great hits to sign on with MGM. Although his career at MGM was full of wonderful recordings, most hardly created a ripple in the wave of first, the British invasion of the US, and then the psychedelic era of the later 1960's.
There is Only One Roy Orbison had Ride Away, Claudette, and many other great songs that, for the most part, went unheard and were ignored by the "Top 40" stations of the era. That is a shame; seeing this album re-released as a "stand-alone" album is exciting and hopefully Roy's millions of fans who may have missed this one the first time around will pick it up, listen to it, and love it.
Peak performance September 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is Roy Orbison completely at ease and self-assured in the style that he defined for himself in the five years at Monument Records prior to this first album release after his switch to MGM. It's always been my favorite among his original albums. At the same time, of course, it was an oddity at the time, since, only a year after "Oh, Pretty Woman", the album didn't produce a hit ("Ride Away" was a mild one, but hardly one remembered by the general public). Yet the vocal performance, the production, the whole ace Nashville studio thing with all the famous musicians on the album was / is the way you want Roy Orbison to sound. Special stand-out tracks are "Afraid to Sleep", "Big As I Can Dream", but others like them are just as immediately memorable. I like the bluesy "Sugar and Honey" tossed in for good measure, too. And of course, a spirited version of his Sun original "Claudette" adds perspective to the album as well. - As I understand, part of the Legacy reissue project of Roy's whole recording career, which has been missing for years and years.
