there are two angles from which to view this release. Firstly in terms of Renaissance and calling it a mix collection . The music has moved on since the mid 90`s and the two progressive house genre defining albums ( second one is the best by far if you listen to it now, the debate will rage !!)It`s clearly still a Rennaissance sound to it which shows continuity and thankfully lacks any pandering to the tedious obsession electronic music has had for 3 years with anything minimal and electro ( unlike some of Dave Seamans / Digweeds recent releases !) . This leads me to the other angle from which to view this ie how does it compare with other Danny Howells releases. ? Well Danny like Sasha ,Digweed, Sander Kleinenberg, Jimmy van M has left only really Hernan Cattaneo currently flying the flag for the spacey deep progressive house sound that peaked between 1999 and 2003 . But Dannys gone off in a different direction from the rest and has gone all spacey deep house and its pretty damn good although like most deep house albums it loses it`s way a couple of times. His sound had always been on the more deep house rather than trance end of prog but as deep house heads will testify it`s pretty timeless music a great headphone experience. If you liked the house CD of his 24/7 release or the nocturnal frequencies this is it`s deep house cousin and compliments rather than replicates that sound . Enjoy !
Modern outing for an old formula September 26, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This 5th outing of the, what was once 'original', Mix Collection series is somewhat lacking in soul. Maybe it's just me, being an oldie.. The first two Mix Collections from 1994 and '95 respectively were two of the finest dance albums ever created, followed by two further release in 96 and 97 that ultimately signaled a more commercial output for the brand. But although this new release isn't commercial in the sense that their are "shelve songs" (shop sellers), it just lacks the spark and innocence of the first two albums that reflected a quite unique brand. Instead, it feels flat and just lacks any sort of resemblance to what can be a gorgeous brand. I suppose theirs no way of going back to creating unique albums as in the 90's, as society and music have moved on and I believe are heading for a famous 1979 Disco Crash (thanks to money). Never the less, if such is the case, they could at least keep the good memories of The Mix Collections alive by not milking the name.
It's up to you if you agree or disagree; I can only talk on behalf of my own clubbing/DJ'ing experience. With such being the case, this album does not contain a tenth of the quality that original residents such as Sasha, Digweed, or even Ossia could produce.
