Innovative drum and bass November 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
2008 has been a good year for Drum and Bass. We've seen London Elektricity's "Syncopated City", Danny Byrd's highly acclaimed debut album, "Supersized" and now there's this to put the icing on the cake.
Don't expect generic basslines that you might have found in C&S' earlier works, In this album you can see that they've grown up a bit are now widening the genre with sounds no one's heard before.
Can't Get Enough opens the album spectacularly and it couldn't have a more suitable name, it's too short. 9/10
Music Club contains lots of cultural samples to prove Chase and Status' new flavours. 9/10
The next track, "Against all Odds feat Kano" is a fast paced rap track which comes as a nice surprise for a dnb album. 9/10
Streetlife is the next track to be delivered in More than Alot. Chilled beats, smooth vocals and a nice bass hold this great track together. 9/10
Lets face it, if you've been listening to Drum and Bass recently, I find it hard to believe that you haven't heard the next track, "Smash TV". I don't really need to explain how big this tune is. 10/10
Pieces is probably my favourite my favourite track from More than Alot. It starts with nice chilled sounds accompanied by singing and then changes completely into a jump up heavy bassline dnb track. 10/10
Eastern Jam is a great dubstep track and if you're into that kinda thing, you're probably gonna love it. If, like me, you're not exactly a fan of dubstep, you'll probably still like this cos this isn't any regular generic dubstep. 7/10 (but if i was a fan of dubstep this'd probably be a 10)
Foundation is a short 50 seconds "Skit" so there's not really any need for me to give this a rating.
Take me Away is driven by it's catchy wobbly bassline, speedy beats and house style vocals. 9/10
Hurt You was an extremely big hit in drum and bass in 2007. In fact its probably the track that got me into Chase and Status. The main synth is sublime and the vocals stay stuck in your head for days. 10/10
Running is by far my favourite dubstep track of all time. I've honestly never heard anything like it before and I've loved since the first time i listened to it. 10/10
Take U There isn't really a stand out track in my opinion but it definitely fits into the album with its chilled vocals and beats. 8/10
Is it Worth It ends the album nicely with a similar structure to Pieces. Beginning with powerful vocals and a piano, this tune transforms into a heavy bass driven jump up dnb track. 9/10
Less Than Alot November 15, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm fairly new to Chase & Status so I can't really take into account their past works, but this is of course their first proper album anyway after they've acheived mainstream exposure more recently...you can see what they've tried to do. This album does not know what it is! Yeah of course it has the 'Pieces' track for which many would be drawn to this album (myself included) as well as some other heavy DnB tracks and perhaps crossing over to Dub, but what really dissappointed me about the album was the lack of direction; it's just like a collection of tracks which don't really relate to each other or even sound of the same genre. I was expecting an album full of stuff like Pieces and Smash TV (another pretty cool track), but instead, it's all mixed in with really boring RnB vibes and even some 80s-style sounds as on 'Running'. I wanted more tracks which were as exciting as 'Pieces'.
This album should have positioned itself as more of a pedigree DnB album with some Dub influences and stayed well away from the ubiquitous sounds of RnB. But I guess this is what happens when artists like this get the chance to sell themselves to the mainstream.
Rather Good November 4, 2008 Ok, what most impressed me about this album is the variety on display. It ranges from chilled funky DnB in similar styles to High Contrast (Can't Get Enough, Take Me Away) to the incredibly heavy dubstep-y-ness of 'Eastern Jam'.
If you liked anything by Chase & Status before, you'll love this, it's got 'Hurt You' for starters, so can't really go wrong there!
Recommended.
