It's still a Glamourous World (4.5 Stars) November 30, 2008 I am a great fan of the original by the Passions, the epic power of it still blows me away. Let's say, that you wouldn't want just any old one covering this. Luckily it's in a safe pair of hands with the Pet Shop Boys producing it. They have a fine reputation for collaborating with/producing female artists, and Sam Taylor-Wood puts in a good vocal, but it's the sublime arrangements that seduce me more than her voice if I'm being really honest. It has to be said that it's not quite as brilliant as the original, but I don't think anyone would expect it to be. But it's still a very commendable attempt at updating it into a modern dance tune, and it's been covered very tastefully with a lot of love and respect. However, another act that could also have got away with doing this is Goldfrapp, and Alison would have sung it more seductively. These are minor quibbles and it's still a cracking tune that fans of the original will love. Order it now!
Glamourous Swoon of Nostalgia November 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What an extraordinary mix this song is. Updated by almost two decades, it stands on its own, taking the listener across moving atmospheres, sonic textures, a slow, lingering dance... You're transported to another time. Is it the 1980s, the 1930s viewed through a camera lens, or is it a new revelation? The Pet Shop Boys have proven themselves Masters of their craft, and the sensual vocals by Sam Taylor-Wood compliment the song in every way. I don't know where she came from, but I hope she's here to stay. The Lady understands the elegance of the lyrics, and gives us a sterling interpretation. She sings with a wondrous delivery, and there are pictures we hear. The Pet Shop Boys- here across the USA, Radio has left them largely forgotten. The legions of fans attend their rare concerts, and purchase their latest UK import releases. We remember, we know they are Here and Now. The Boys continue to astonish for those with ears to listen. They've done it again, creating an Autumnal aura, a silvery, polished vision. I hear this song and I'm taken by Nostalgia. The Boys are back, and this time they've got Sam Wood-Taylor gracing their music. I can't wait to buy her album. If this is any measure of what she can do, her future augurs well. Buy the single, play it in the late hours of the evening, and send yourself far away...

The boys have gone back to their Behaviour roots when producing this track. Lovely vocals by Sam but its the simplicity of the arrangement that scores this track. It would be interesting if Neil records his version as a "b" side to a future song.
