Utter drivel October 22, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Anderson has reached a new low with this album. Incredibly frustrating to listen to. I've given it three plays with an open mind in the hope some of it might grow on me, but no, there's nothing likeable about this album at all. It's a real shame considering some of his highlights of the past. If this was a debut you'd never hear of him again. With luck he'll be on form again for the next release.
Disappointing October 9, 2008 Brett Anderson will always have a stalwart fan base of devotees who will lavish praise upon his work. Whereas there are elements here which are lovely, a word I have chosen specifically for its lack of actual meaning, the whole in itself disappoints. Ostensibly inspired by responses to his stripped down solo gigs where he mixed his own materials with Suede classics, I find this recording to lack emotional punches, it's miserable. It is mannered, it is stylized, but there is nothing here which he hasn't done before - and actually done better. I would investigate the live recordings - if you can get hold of them, which of course you can't now bacause they were limited editions, good one Brett - the sound is exactly the same but the songs are infinitely better. Disappointing on so many levels.
Simply Awesome ! October 8, 2008 Brett, Amy , a piano , guitar and a cello , stripped down to bare bones , minimal ,there was Suede and now there is Brett with his brutal honesty , buy this right now !
A beautiful collection September 30, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Although I am a pretty hardcore Suede fan, I found Brett's first solo effort very disappointing and can't honestly say I enjoy listening to it very often. Wilderness, however, is a different case all together. A collection of hauntingly beautiful and often melancholic songs that just works really well.
I can understand why some reviewers might find all the tracks a bit 'samey' - there are strong musical similarities between some of them, but once played a handful of times, each song really does stand up on its own merits. The combination of piano and cello works beautifully and, unlike the previous album, Wilderness benefits hugely from it's obvious simplicity and from not being over produced.
achingly beautiful September 29, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I know music is a very personal thing, and what inspires one person will leave another cold. I also don't profess to be a musical expert in any way. However I am at a bit of a loss to understand some of the strong criticisms of this album. I am not a dyed in the wool Suede or Brett Anderson fan, but came to this album with an open mind. Personally I find it hauntingly beautiful. Yes it is painfully melancholic at times, speaking as it does of lost love and the deep and unremitting anguish this can leave one feeling. But the beauty of this album is the stark unadulterated simplicity of a man conveying that emotion. I am sure that Brett wrote this from the heart, and if you have ever felt that heart tearing, gut wrenching feeling of loss, then you will understand this album fully, and relate on a deeply emotional level with it. My personal favourite tracks are A different place, Chinese Whispers, Clowns, and Blessed, but I think every track has merit. It has encouraged me to invest in more of Suede and Brett's solo work. I love this album even though I often cannot listen to it without crying, and I cannot recommend it enough.
