Amazon.co.uk Review Would it be outlandish to suggest that wholesome rugby-shouldered ruddy-faced English piano-pop boys Keane have spent the best part of their two-album career fanning the impression that they exist somewhere between an easy Mothers' Day gift and the album it's ok to give your girlfriend back when you split up, just in order to blow everyone out of the water like 80s neon-pop commandos with the boldness of their third? You know, utilising the element of surprise? Probably, but even though their debut (Hopes & Fears) and its follow up (Under the Iron Sea) may have been broader creative successes than many care to admit, it is true that Perfect Symmetry is a synth-brandishing Tyrannosaurus Rex next to those trundlingly melodic Trojan horses. From the moment "Spiralling", the single that made a nation choke on its Yakult, erupts like a Top of the Pops volcano with flashes of David Bowie, Talking Heads, Erasure, Prefab Sprout and James, amongst others--with the "WHOOOO!" interjections impacting like lava hitting an LA swimming pool and sending cocktails flying--the album is generally as taut, bulky and bronzed as a teen Arnold Schwarzenegger. Old habits die hard and there is still much in the way mid-paced melancholy, but they are sung with clarity and the songwriting stays tight with some deep lyrics and turns of phrase to balance out the vague and which presumably reflect Tom Chaplin's documented decent into addiction. "Playing Along", a beautifully arranged set of textures and gathering emotional bursts, is a particular high. --James Berry

Another Disappointed Keane Fan... October 31, 2008 Yeh, ain't great guys... what has made Keane so great are those incredible and original melodies, hooks, and massive delay piano lines that stick in your head... bar track 1 and track 6, there's not a lot that sticks in my head or that is making me want to come back for more... so although it's produced to the normal high standard, after 5 back to back listens, I'm sorely disappointed. it's just average. Hope they sort it out for number 4... ;)
About format October 24, 2008 This album is totally awesome! but I want to know which is the format of the dvd? is it NTSC or PAL?
And now for something completely different October 20, 2008 The first 2 albums were great, simple catchy songs great lyrics and the whole gelled together well. This new album, is a departure from the well trodden formula of the two first albums. I think it is important to try out something new, rather than turning the same things out again and again. It is quite easy to get bored with the same old thing. I think it is a brave move to have taken the emphasis of the music to another level and here we have some very original songs. I really enjoy the opening track 'Spiralling' with some high pitched 'Oohs' thrown in for good measure, gets the album off to a cracking start. The songs have been written and put together to be different and this album is able to stand alone against the previous 2. Having listened to it a couple of times now, it is definitely growing on me.
Very disappointing October 20, 2008 Enjoyed Keane's first two albums very much. Had high hopes for the third one. However, this is a dreary and very poor album. There are about one or two passable tracks, the rest are emminently forgettable. Lyrics nowhere near as good as the best songs on the first two albums. Feels over-produced and dated. Will be selling the copy I bought.
Worst of the 3 albums! Gutted! October 16, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was really looking forward to this album and have been left very dissapointed. I loved the first album as it was really original and had loads of catchy songs on it. The second album was pretty good, again had some good catchy songs but the album did have a darker feel to it. Then the 3rd, what can I say. 1st and 2nd track are pretty good but just cannot get into the album at all. It sounds like a completely different group to me and if I had listened to it without knowing who it was I would never of guessed. Time to go back to you roots for the forth album before all you origianl fans are gone. Better luck next time.
