Viva Montreal..... November 2, 2008 What a return to form for the finest Canadian band of the Noughties, after the gentler and less well recieved "Without Feathers" in 2006,this is the sound of the real Stills,a perfect record for the times.
Based around an evironmental disaster something akin to the scenario of McCarthys "The Road" blended with the reason of "An Inconvenient Truth", these 12 tracks glide by and leave you wanting more every time.
There seems to be more of Tim Fletchers rich vocals on this record, blending nicely with a sound pitched somewhere between gutsy rock, shoegazing synths and campfire-gothic.
The best tracks are the swooning "Snow in California", the doom-laden "Dinosaurs" and the raucous, brilliant end of the universe hoedown called "Rooibus/Palm Wine Drunkard".
I have fears that this album will not displace the tedium of Coldplay and Snow Patrol from our charts but maybe its a good thing, records as intelligent and heartfelt as this arent for the pop charts........
Thank the Lord! October 27, 2008 I am SO relieved and thrilled that The Stills are back to what originally drew me to them in the first place. 'Logic' was a beautiful album in so many ways and I felt physcially sick when first hearing the dreadful follow-up album 'Feathers. 'Oceans' is a return to grace, long live The Stills!
three quality albums October 21, 2008 Having just read the previous review I felt compelled to write another purely to say that the previous album (Without Feathers) was just as good as the debut, this album is equally as good again. I think the writer of the last rewiew needs to lighten up and accept Without Feathers as a quality catchy pop rock album and there's a lot to be said for that kind of music these days when there's so much depressing emo around.
Anyway all three stills albums are great, buy them all, love them and thank me later!
Stills back to their best!!!!!!!!!!! August 27, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've got this album already and I've got to say its up their with there debut (Logic Will Break Your Heart) If your a Stills fan and thought their first album was amazing you shouldn't be disappointed with Oceans will rise! I wont even mention the second album! I forgive them for that. I put the second down to taking (too many drugs) Doesn't always = great music! But this album is spot on! From the first Listen the songs stick and thats a good sign! It's a fresh sound that moves on from their first album but still retains great melodic tracks one after another. It is truly great to have the stills back! Buy it and see!!!!!!!!
