Electric Music! September 10, 2004 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
The music of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra is the most elctric music I have heard in a long time. It takes classical Music to a new edge that will make the hairs on the back of your neck literally stand on end. The repertoire is a wonderful mixture of spine tingling and calming, serene and bombastic. There is something in here for everyone. There are many pieces that are quirky and funny and ones that will have you applauding out loud with the audience from the concert! I have done so myself on many a piece! Buy this CD, lock yourself in a quiet place and down a bottle of wine and you will be "chilled" to horizontal proportions!
A delight to the ears. May 19, 2003 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
For me 'When in Rome' represents PCO at their emotional best. The fact that it's live adds to the depth and beauty of their music. But how to describe them? Firstly expect to recognise some of the tracks from TV ads, spots etc. But PCO is so much more than that. The music is delightful, light, charming, complex in arrangement and just, well unique. This is music for everyone. Lie back, shut your eyes and be transported to a better place. Like 'The Matrix' no-can can describe Penguin Cafe; you have to experience it. :-)Guaranteed to make you smile.
Simply amazing! November 5, 2000 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
The most amazing thing about The Penguin Cafe is that no one knows about this "band", but this is amazing stuff. The songs could be various pieces from Mozart, Beethoven or any other, but they are not, they are original compositions by Simon Jeffes. When you listen to this album a couple of times, you'll like it for the rest of your life. It's the kind of music that grows on you, very romantic, gentle and fragile... There are no vocals throughout the album, but you still feel the music is talking to you. An astonishing achievment. It's about time they get what they deserve.
