A PCO-novice? Start here! July 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the place to start with the music of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. It's hard to describe where the music is about; its minimal music with built-in humour and melodies. The feel is acoustic with a few electric guitars and basses thrown-in. There are sounds that nudge towards chamber-music, but there's reggae too. Highlights are the classic Music for a found Harmonium, the dreamy Music for Helicopter Pilots and the sunny In the Back of a Taxi.
Brilliant March 8, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Need to relax - then sit back and press play with this music. it is relatively minimalist but not quite. the harmonies and melodies work well and some even tell a story. and its always fun trying to work out how they came up with the titles for the tunes!
Off-beat excellence March 3, 2006 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is certainly the most accessible of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra's output. The music is melodic, rhythmic and repetitive, but not in the minimalist school. It never reaches a crescendo, but nevertheless is a captivating blend of strings, guitar and more obscure instruments. The late Simon Jeffes blazed a trail that - as far as I know - nobody else has followed. Get this album - take the risk! It's worth it.
A largely unrecognised classic April 23, 2003 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
Broadcasting form Home is probably one of the easier Penguin Cafe Orchestra titles and makes an excellent introduction to this genre. Many will recognise several of the tracks as they have been regularly used as backing or background music to TV programmes. Let this take nothing away from Broadcasting from Home though, if you like your music a little off-beat, creative yet involving - you really should try this!
It's brilliant, but nobody knows what it is! October 30, 2000 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
Most people have never heard of the PCO because it defies categorisation. The music is a mix of easy to listen to compositions by Simon Jeffes et al and could, if one had to, be compared to work by Phillip Glass or Mathilde Santing. If you enjoy chilled out, easy listening music, then try this CD.
