At Last! Only "Freedom is Frightening" to go... August 5, 2008 Wonderful - back to 1972 with two of Stomu Yamshta's finest works - at long last on CD. If you love the Jazz-rock of that era (with a little Oriental flavouring) give this a go - on a par with Nucleus, Soft Machine, Isotope and others of the Ilk. And as a SPECIAL TREAT (for me!) there are even two tracks from Freedom is Frightening (Please can we have the rest of that LP on CD. Pretty Please!).
Important David Bowie related release -at last! August 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Again, like the reviewer above, I'm relieved that I can finaly cross these albums of my 'must have on CD release'. They should have been released decades ago.
An intriguing blend of easterm percussion, subtle jazzy prog and ambient moments, these are Yamashta's best albums (if not his most famous) by a long chalk. Three of the tracks featured on this 'twofer' feature prominently in the soundtrack of the film 'The Man Who Fell To Earth', which of course featured David Bowie. No soundtrack of this film has ever been released. The vinyl versions of these Yamashta albums were deleted in the 1970s.
The key tracks are 'Poker Dice', 'Mandala' and 'Memories of Hiroshima', all of which feature in the Bowie film. The rest of the material is great too, it's just that these three cuts will have enormous resonance for fans of Bowie and director Nic Roeg.
But why did we have to wait more than 20 years after the proliferation of CD for a reissue. I blame Island records, who should have pulled thier fingers out and issued these CDs in the early nineties at the latest.
Available at last July 22, 2008 I've been waiting for these 2 albums to be released on CD for years. Not only the 2 best albums by Yamashta, but they are high up in my top 100 albums of all time. Do yourself a favour and at least try to hear something from them. If you're a Yamashta fan, and you don't own them yet BUY NOW while available. SHEER GENIUS & SHEER BEAUTY
