Twenty Gems from Britain's First Lady of Song November 13, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This compilation of late 1970s recordings includes the complete "Destiny" LP, B-sides from single releases, and three previously unreleased tracks that are among the best of the collection. Clark's talent as a songwriter is showcased here, with eight of the twenty tunes composed by her alone or in collaboration with others. Andrew Lloyd Webber is well-represented by Clark's stunning interpretations of the CD's title tune, "I Could Have Given You More" (which later was given new lyrics for inclusion in "Cats" as "Gus the Theatre Cat"), and "Sheldon Bloom," a rocking number from "Tell Me on a Sunday" (aka Act One of "Song and Dance"). Another highlight is the alternate take of "Put a Little Sunbeam in Your Life," a tune written for UK television commercials promoting the Chrysler car of the same name. All in all, a superb follow-up to "Paris/Orleans/Paris," which compiled all of Clark's French CBS recordings from the same period. A must for die-hard fans, and highly recommended for those who know Clark only from her "Downtown" era of the mid- to late-60s.
Petula - Don't stop the music October 27, 2007 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Having the original 'Destiny' album (1978)on vinyl, I was thrilled to hear that this, along with some fabulous previously unreleased tracks were going to have a new CD release. I was not disappointed. The tracks have been remastered superbly and I am really enjoying rediscovering these fabulous songs from a gtreat songstress.
If you are not familiar with Petula's output apart from the sixties singles, this set is a real treat - some up beat disco tracks and some slower more poignant tracks. Also some songs that Petula has written herself. There are many highlights and no disappointments and the inlay notes provide a very interesting commentry.
If you are a fan then it is a must (but you dont need telling that do you). If you are looking to explore Petula's career further, then this album provides a good introduction to what she was up to in the late 70's.
There is talk of a third volume in this series which will showcase Petula's perfomance as Maria in TSOM. Yes please! And thank you to those who were involved in putting this album together and ensuring its release.
