THE GENIUS OF NED MILLER: ONE OF THE VERY BEST!! November 27, 2008
This is a sad case of an Artist who doesn't have confidence and belief in his own talents, which is amazing when you consider what a great Singer, Musician and Songwriter this man is. He is a much better Artist than a lot of other Artists who have recorded and performed in Musical History. It's unbelievable that a man with Ned's Musical calibre suffers from stage fright and shyness, when other Artists who have much less talent and ability than Ned, have all the arrogance in the world to parade around shamelessly. This particular album of greatest hits showcases Ned's brilliance, not only as a Songwriter but also as a Singer. Nobody these days can sing as well as Ned. Additionally, the clarity and quality of the recordings are excellent and you won't be disappointed with this compilation of songs, in fact, in any way at all. I can't stop playing the album, and I love the beautiful harmonies and voices of the back up singers in Ned's songs as well, not to mention the very high standard of the accompanying orchestra and band. Where else do you get such good music these days? : I'd say nowhere!! Ned Miller deserves to be given a lot more credit and status than he has been given over the years: the man is a musical genius and he is a musical legend. Good on you Ned!!!!!!
One of the songs which had a life of its own April 13, 2008 Ned Miller on discharge from the Marines in 1956 was a songwriter who signed with Fabor Records and cut From a jack to a King the year after as his 2nd single.Though his singles all flopped he had more success with 2 songs picked up by others-label mate Bonnie Guitar with Dark Moon and Jimmy Newman with A fallen star-both of which got pop covers. In the period up to 1962 Miller had been on another label and returned to Fabor on condition they reissued From a jack to a King. This time round it charted Worldwide. The song gathered up covers from Jim Reeves,Jerry Lee Lewis,Elvis and Ferlin Husky and was something of a standard for U K club singers. Miller gave up the business in 1970 ironically after cutting an album called Ned Miller's Back but in 1980 the song topped the country charts for new singer Ricky Van Shelton. Miller is a One Hit Wonder in terms of the top 40-other records were only minor
Brilliant country singer-songwriter February 3, 2005 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
Ned is best remembered for international pop smash, From a jack to a king, which was a top ten hit in Britain and America. That song rightly opens this collection but closer inspection reveals much of interest to country music fans. Apart from the opening track here, this set also includes Ned's own recording of Dark moon (a song that was an American top ten hit for both Bonnie Guitar and Gale Storm), Invisible tears (a country hit for Ned and a minor American pop hit for Ray Coniff) and Do what you do do well (a minor pop hit in Britain and America and a top ten country hit). Among the other tracks here are those that made up his 1963 LP, From a jack to a king. Many of the songs had western themes including Cry of the wild goose, Billy Carino and Stagecoach, but the album also included Just before dawn (one of Ned's best apart from the famous songs) and Ned's cover of Mona Lisa, so the LP was not exclusively a western-themed album. Based on his two biggest hits, this album had a few surprises in store for me - but they were all nice surprises. If you enjoy traditional country music, Ned 's music is well worth hearing.
