Just superb July 25, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I must admit to being a bit of an Al Stewart fan particularly his early few albums but after hearing this I can quite easily state this is his masterpiece. The lyrics are so 'adult' and interesting that I can not praise the album highly enough. Of the highlights,Night train to Munich is a spy story,Lindy comes to Town is the story of Lindberg's flight across the Atlantic,Life between the wars just a beautiful melody, Laughing into 1939 a poignant and terrific song, and the final instrumental Black Danube a great tune (loosely based on something by Gershwin?) The guitar and violin playing on the album is second to none and the whole feel of twenties/thirties is excellent. Buy this, play it at least 3 times and you'll be hooked
A masterpiece from a master July 8, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
When I think that I paid a small fortune for this CD on ebay about six years ago I say - through gritted teeth - that it is one of the best albums that Al has done. But let's face it, with the exception of the over-orchestrated first album, the man has not put a foot wrong over the many years that he has been writing his sublime songs.
There is not one duff track on the CD, nothing to skip and it contains some of the best songs he has done (Lindy, Joe the Georgian, Marion the Chatelaine).
One of his very best November 6, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Great to see this is available again! Not a typical Al Stewart Album, with a strong jazz influence, but great lyrics & great tunes throughout. Highly recommended.
Less accessible than other Al Stewart albums but fine music September 5, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Music and a history lesson together! Al dips into deep into history from the 1920s and 30s for all the material on this album, dragging some obscure topics into his songs.
This album is less accessible than, say, Time Passages but it certainly showcases Al's writing and guitar skills. It's the sort of album that needs a few listenings but then grows on you. It's also worth reading up on the history of the time to fully understand the lyrics. This album will never be a big seller but if you like something more interesting than boy/girl bands then this might be worth a listen.
Spellbinding guitars and words February 12, 2007 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
The mesmerising music draws the listener in and then transports him or her back to the 1920s and 1930s. The jaunty 'Lindy Comes to Town' is a foot tapping number that is full of joy. And who else could think of putting The Treaty Of Versailles to music, as Al has done with the 'League Of Notions'. Al Stewart has not attempted to whoo a wider audience with the relatively 'non-commercial' content of this material. Instead he and Laurence Juber have produced a masterpiece that will be a 'must have' for anyone who just likes brilliant music with marvellous, historical poetry.
