2 out of 5 stars For completists only   August 6, 2008

I've bought this CD release because I have all of the A&M Strawbs re-issues on CD and this was the one which I thought would never see the light of day. When I bought it in 1975 or whenever it was on vinyl, I thought it was a clunker. It still is a clunker compared to the rest of the A&M catalogue but the passage of time has made me appreciate the fact that there are some tracks which are worth having - notably, 'So Shall Our Love Die?'; 'Hanging in The Gallery', 'Golden Salamander' and 'For Absent Friends'. The Lambert tracks 'Little Sleepy' and 'Back on the Farm' are really dreadful and barely worthy of being single B- sides. These tracks and Tokyo Rosie and Mind of My Own drag the record down and it never really recovers.

The whole package, from the sterile artwork to the lack of focus makes it for me the strangest record in their cannon. The departure of John Hawken, player of the wonderful mellotron which lavishly adorned the classic Hero and Heroine and Ghosts records but which is sadly absent here, was clearly very significant and it's as if the band had lost their way. A&M clearly thought so too and dropped the band.

Worth having for the aforementioned tracks and for you completists. But still a clunker....

Ten years after 6 of the 9 Strawbs A&M albums were issued (most for the first time) on CD we now at last have the remaining 3, Nomadness being the final album the band recorded for A&M. It's been a while since i've looked forward to a batch of reissues but having plunged head first into the Strawbs catalogue back in 1998 (and being enthralled in the process) I was eager to complete what I consider a classic run of albums.
I am certainly not disappointed by this album. It's much simpler in structure with no song being over 5 minutes. The album doesn't really veer much from the path the band had taken with some truly beautiful sounding music courtesy of Golden Salamander and Hanging In The Gallery. Dave Cousins has such an expressive voice and, particularly on Golden Salamander, you can really understand how much emotion he pours into the song. It is personally one of my favourite Strawbs songs.
I agree with one of the other reviews in that Little Sleepy and Mind of My Own are a touch weak and don't really fit in with the overall sound of the album. But, minor criticisms.
Universal must be commended for the effort they've put in to this and the other 2 reissues. Mark Powell's research and sleeve notes are as informative as ever and Paschal Byrne's remastering is truly superb. The artwork presentation is excellent with faithful reproduction of the generic early A&M LP label on the disc (although I believe a different design would have been used on Nomadness). Still, a nice touch.
Overall a very welcome addition to my collection. Now, all we need are some CD versions of the Hudson Ford albums and Dave Cousins solo.

4 out of 5 stars A Strong Album with a few Weak Cuts.   August 6, 2008
This was the final classic Strawbs album (for me anyway). Two of Strawbs best songs - "Golden Salamander" and " Hanging in the Gallery" - is here. But there are some weaker cuts, especially "Litte Sleepy". Without that tune and the rather patchy "A Mind of My Own" it would have been a 5 star review.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing   July 7, 2008

At Last! No need to buy inferior bootlegs copied from an old damaged cassette, as have been offered elsewhere. This is the official re-mastered release. And such great tracks too. All great - but ones that stand out: To be Free, Golden Salamander (with Dave's dulcimer), Hanging in the Gallery and Absent Friend. Bonus tracks now include 'Still Small Voice' used on the '75 tour for the band's entrance - but otherwise thought by some to be lost - NO MORE! I bought this on vinyl when it was first issued - a missing classic is now revived.
