4 out of 5 stars A new world of funky sounds   July 29, 2005

If the Eden Project session of Live 8 sparked an interest in the sounds of Africa, yet you are unable to make up your mind which of the myriad of artistes you should buy first, then perhaps you might like to take a first tentative step courtesy of this fine record.

It's a truly insightful glimpse at how African artists interpreted the sounds of Sly & The Family Stone, Hendrix, and others during the early days of the 70's. It's an interesting mix of styles, with input from representatives of Benin, Cameroon and Ghana. How does it sound? A mix of salsa/traditional african rhythms and great beats.

Any Dj's looking for a tune or two to drop into a funky breaks/soul party will gain some envious looks if they chose a number of these tracks.

A very interesting, playable and funky proposition!

4 out of 5 stars Not my usual thing, but.....   April 15, 2005

Though a man of eclectic tastes 'World Music' is usually a turn-off term for me being more into contemporary Brit & US bands, singer/songwriters, etc. When this arrived as one of my 3 albums of the month from Rough Trade Album Club was ready to send it straight back! But..... come on, give it a chance! And I did. And... I like it. REALLY like it. Funky, cool, and not too "Worldy". Just enjoyable vibes and grooves to a psychedelic beat. So lose your prejudice, get down, enjoy!!!
