God bless the Gorky's March 30, 2005 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
A complete and utter joy from start to finish. If you like the Stereophonics...you don't like music and you won't like this.....if you like the Super Furries.....then go forth and purchase.

Buy this for the patio song, keep listening to it for the others, which are damn good also.
There's no one else like GZM January 17, 2002 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
When I got Barafundle I didn't know what the singles sounded like.Based on the name of the band,I decided to take a risk & found out what their sound was like.I was very happy I did,for it is quite a different musical journey. The melodies are unforgettable & the songs remind me of hobbits(I couldn't help thinking about Lord of the Rings when I listened to 'The Wizard & the Lizard'.)The songs are perfection, the stand-out tracks being 'Diamond Dew','Heywood Lane','Starmoonsun','Dark Night','Miniature Kingdoms'. The only other band that sounds a bit like them is Jethro Tull('Mother Goose' from their Aqualung album wouldn't sound dated after listening to GZM.) Buy this CD & enjoy the Welsh singing & the interesting lyrics sung in English. The lyrics may not make sense to you but boy are they original!
my descent into GZM madness June 16, 2001 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
an absolute hidden gem. i can honestly say that this is in my all time top 5 albums, and at least two others in that top five will be gorky's albums. barafundle is a perfect introduction, a stepping stone between their psychedelic/indie early days and their current folk sound.
Brilliant April 21, 2001 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The bands 3rd album & most consistant, this has to be considered their finest moment. Although classed as an "Indie" band (with Celtic influences), I cant think of anyone else who sounds exactly like this, it really is in its own weird little dream world. Much modern guitar music sounds despairingly similar.. but lo & behold, Euros Childs & his group seems to have found the key to a whole different world of melodies. Just when you think a song is going normaly a key change will suddenly make you sit up and gasp with delight. They just seem to have a different approach to tunes. the "Barafundle Bumbler" is a gem of a song, about a boy whos a peeping tom, and sets the stage for the bands strangely parochial approach. "Starmoonsun" & "Sometimes the father is the sun" are sublimely precious moments, rarely found in todays music. I cannot praise this album enough.
