More than just Hello Muddah Hello Fadduh August 22, 2003

While Allan will rightly remembered for his classic comic song about a group of schoolboys on an outdoor camping holiday, he made other great records too, some of which can be found here.Allan was a great lyric writer – apart from Hello Muddah hello Fadduh, he wrote many other witty songs including Sarah Jackman. He also wrote new lyrics to well-known songs, including Crazy downtown (a parody of Petula's classic Downtown) and You're getting to be a rabbit with me (a parody of the thirties classic You're getting to be a habit with me, which with its original lyrics has been recorded by many singers including Bing Crosby and Diana Krall). I have heard several parodies of Twelve days of Christmas but Allan's version is as good as any of them. If you enjoy comedy singers such as Ray Stevens, give Allan's music a listen.

A great compilation of the brilliantly funny Allan Sherman. Sherman enjoyed a brief period of fame in the early 60's as a great writer and performer of parodies.Most of his funniest tracks are here: Hello Muddah, Hello Father; Crazy Downtown and the side splittingly funny Sarah Jackman. Sherman's impish wit and way with lyrics shine through, as does his punchy and gutsy singing style. He has a great line in deprecating jewish humour - listen to his shmaltzy parody of the Irish American tune: "Shake hands with your Uncle Mike". One or two of the tracks have dated a bit and it misses out on such classics as "The Mexican Hat dance" and "I'm in the Mood for Love" - but it is a great opportunity to enjoy this much missed and unassuming funnyman.
