You've got to respect the comedy March 7, 2003 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Although the comedy is a little uneven, this album contains some of the funniest material I have ever heard. Of course, the big selling point is the inclusion of The Chanukah Song; this live performance is great fun to listen to at any time of the year. Amazingly enough, it is not the funniest track on the album. That honor goes to Respect; it is the funniest comedy sketch I have ever heard in my life, and it actually gets funnier the more times I listen to it. A little boy describes his first day at school to his grandfather and his cronies at the social club. All they talk about is respect—you’ve got to respect the finger paint, you’ve got to respect the play dough, you’ve got to respect the milk, etc. Eventually, they start arguing among themselves when someone repeats himself or says something stupid like “you’ve got to respect the condom” when the kid says he kissed a girl at school. It’s impossible to explain, but trust me when I say it is hilarious. Another immensely funny track is The Goat, which features a talking goat who sounds a whole lot like either Cheech or Chong; it’s stupid, but it cracks me up. It really and truly sounds like Sandler and the guys were just making some of the stuff up as they went along and were cracking each other up. Adam Sandler just has the ability to take utterly silly ideas and make them work. An example is The Adventures of the Cow, which chronicles events such as a cow skydiving for the first time who thinks his chute won’t open but finally it does, a cow who wows the audience with a belly flop dive and then remembers he can’t swim, a cow who gets upset when one of his shots is called out in a tennis match. It’s just moos and a cowbell jangling, but it’s brilliant. You do get several songs on here beside The Chanukah Song, but for the most part these are the less appealing parts of the album to me. Dip Doodle, a song for all the grandmas, is a funny nonsense song, Ode To My Car is OK, but Mr. Bake-O, Crazy Love, and Steve Polychronopolous are basically just tolerable. There is a whole lot of adult language on this tape, and the sex humor can get downright uncomfortable (especially in the Do It For Mama sketch); there’s a lot of toilet humor (pretty much in a literal sense in The Hypnotist) which doesn’t always appeal to me but is still rather comical. The Excited Southerner tracks which are scattered throughout the album get a little tiresome, and as a Southerner I feel compelled to say that the character sounds in no way Southern (slightly Cajun, perhaps, but not traditionally Southern). I can’t give the album five stars because a few tracks fail to win me over completely, but the first 15 minutes boasts some of the funniest material known to man. If you like Adam Sandler, you will love this tape.
