One of the greatest labels! November 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
ZTT were one of THE great record labels during my formative years and this beautifully fashioned collection is everything I hoped it would be. Pretty much all of the big hits and Trevor Horn productions are included, alongside a lot of lesser known but often equally interesting tunes by artists like The Frames, Heights of Abraham and Tara, who was Joan Collin's daughter, don't you know. I didn't. Plus you get a DVD disc featuring 18 ZTT videos. Some of them have dated as you might expect, but there are some real gems here - like Shane MacGowan's `That Woman's Got Me Drinking', which was directed by and stars Johnny Depp, the rare Video Destructo version of Frankie's Two Tribes and Close (To The Edit) by the brilliant Art of Noise, with it's satanic pixie smashing up pianos and suchlike. It also comes with a 72-page book with detailed notes, lots of cool photos and a long essay from label co-founder Paul Morley, who is wordy but always entertaining. It's about time the work of `Zang Tuum Tumb' was celebrated in this way and here is a timely reminder of what an exciting label they were/are. To be fair, anything that includes Duel by Propaganda and Cubik by the wonderful 808 State is going to get my knickers in a knot, but this really is a great piece of work on a number of levels.
5 stars!
The cupboard is bare November 11, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is quite a lot of money to pay for what for me, disappointingly, turned out to be content of a generally not very high standard.
You will most likely already have the material by the major ZTT artists. The rarer stuff - the real reason for buying this box set - mostly deserves its obscurity. Some items, such as Shane McGowan's appalling imitation of the Sid Vicious 'My Way' should never have been recorded, let alone released. The booklet has many words but I found it lacked any kind of genuine aesthetic insight.
I'm a huge fan of Trevor Horn and never thought I'd have second thoughts about anything issued on the ZTT label. But I would urge caution here.
