DVD please October 17, 2008 I still have my LP of The Point but like other reviewers I have great memories of the brilliant classic cartoon and would be thrilled to have the opportunity to see it again, or better still, to buy it. I dreamed I was in The Land of the Point. I asked for the DVD in a shop. The manager said to me "You're the third custome today that I've told that stocking that DVD would be pointless because there is no demand for it."
Magical childhood memories March 20, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
One night singing nursery rhymes to my son and searching my memory for some new refrains, I suddenly remembered Nilsson's magical tale of 'The Point' that I would listen to as a child over 30 years ago. I have not heard the album since then, but I can still recall many of the melodies and words (and indeed emotions engendered) and I now want to share them with my boy. I also remember a fab illustrated booklet that went with the vinyl version (I think it was a printed booklet and not the cartoon I remember??, and I asked my parents if they still had it. Sadly the booklet has been lost but they still have the record - however I no longer have a record player so I am very pleased to find I can now get a version on CD! I can't wait for it to drop through my letterbox. 'The Point' is the story of a boy, Oblio, who grows up in a world where everyone else has a pointed head - but his head is round. Oblio is banished and told to get himself a pointed head. We are taken on a journey whereby Oblio meets some very weird characters along the way and plunges ito deep turmoil about his condition. But he eventually learns to accept that he is different, and starts to celebrate his difference. At this point he is welcomed back into the fold and everyone agrees to live together in harmony. All very 70's. This is a parable about tolerance that has some good messages in it for children today.
Why can't I get a copy of the original cartoon? December 5, 2004 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I was pleased to see the review from another Amazon customer - So, I'm not the only one that's been looking for the film. I've been searching for years for the video and now for the DVD. It was one of the best feature-length cartoons of all time, but it seems to have disappeared without trace. I was interested to see that a DVD has been generated, although it's obviously not the original, but it appears that it's only available in Region 1 format, so no good to the great majority of UK and Europe customers. If someone can come up with a DVD of the original cartoon, it should sell like hot cakes.
But where is the film? November 25, 2003 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
When I was about ten or so the animated film of Harry Nilsson's The Point album, narrated (I think) by Dustin Hoffman, was shown on the BBC. Where is that film today? It was so great that i still remember it, over thirty years later, and I think children today should have the chance to see it.
crazy musical story time May 12, 2003 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This album is good. Really good. The smooth songs melt into a great surreal dream-like(do I mean seriously drug-fuelled?)story. This kid and his dog, Arrow, live in the land of point, where everything and everyone has a point. Unfortunately our hero has the strange misfortune to have a round head. Everybody else in the land of point has a pointy head and so he is banished to the pointless forest. Great album, great story, great songs. It makes you wish you were a kid again, except that when you were a kid, you never heard such great stuff.
