Amazon.co.uk Review
Whether or not Native Americans appreciate late 20th century Hollywood apologising for stealing their land, Disney's intentions seem to be well meaning. Whether or not the subject matter was responsible in part for it being less of a hit than those before and after, Disney's animation and dabbling in CGI gave it a terrific look. Whether or not it was about time someone else won an Oscar, Alan Menken's score is remarkably rich, with only the barest of "Indian" flavouring and a distinct lack of anything "cowboy". "The Virginia Company" is a Yankee pride march that paves the way for "Savages" to thump out the drums of war at a politically incorrect ethic. "Just Around The Riverbend" is the strongest number, eloquently exploring the possibilities of life. There's also a neat habit of splitting material into two parts, making for a song and score separation that works to the material's advantage. "Listen With Your Heart I" and "II" have some very nice native American backing but in measured doses of sweet and dark. In the extended score suite Menken delivers some adventurous orchestral pieces, with "Skirmish" whipping up a memorable cavalry charge. Whether or not you can stomach it, historical Disney is still Disney. --Paul Tonks

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Soundtrack   May 29, 2006
This was back in the day when Disney were great: when the films had great stories to tell, when the characters were heroes and heriones and when the soundtracks had you singing along.
And this soundtrack really does make you sing (even if, like me, you're terrible). I mean, who in the English speaking world doesn't know at least the chorus to Colours Of The Wind?
But aside from being really catchy, Disney do what they did best and make sure that moral messages are conveyed throught he tracks too. Take Colours Of The Wind, for example. Lines like "You think the only people who are people are the people who look and think like you" really hammer home the message that Disney are getting at in this film, and it's not kiddies stuff, this is a proper anti-racism campaign.
The stand-out tracks are Colours Of The Wind, If I Never Knew You (class Disney duet), Savages and the beautiful instrumental Farewell (the crescendo has your spirits soaring).
If you were a fan of the film, you'll love it, and even if you weren't, there is still plenty of musical merit to justify you buying it. A classic soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!   August 7, 2002

Eveyone who saw the film "Pocahontas" remembers the song "Colors of the Wind". I couldn't get it out of my head for ages! This CD includes "Colors of the Wind as well as "Just Around the River Bend" and "Savages" and all the other beautiful songs that helped to make the film so good.

The beautiful music and wonderful songs perfectly compliment the breathtaking scenery in the film and help make it one of Disney's best.

The first track is "The Virginia Company", a strong track and a good opening for the CD. The second, "Ship at Sea" is also very good and really gives the impression of a stormed-tossed ship in trouble. "Steady as the Beating Drum" is another great track. It really shows the peace and simplicity of the idian tribe's life.

The tracks that everyone remembers are "Colors of the Wind" and "Just Around the River Bend". These really capture the spirit of the young, carefree and mysterious Pocahontas. "Savages" is really good too. It's intense and fast and really helps build up the suspense at the end of the film. Of course it helps that, as usual, Disney has managed to find people with really beautiful voices to sing all these great songs!

The CD ends dramatically with Vanessa William's great performance of "Colors of the Wind" and Jon Secada and Shanice's amazing and extremely emotional performance of "If I Never Knew You". This one's enough to make you cry!

The "Pocahontas" soundtrack is a perfect blend of great songs and beautiful instrumental tracks. It really does the film justice!

5 out of 5 stars The reason I turn to Disney   December 26, 2000

Once again Disney took my breath away from me with their motion picture "Pocahontas". I bought it as soon as it was released to video, and was astonished by the incredible combination of history with contemporary - the 17th Century voyage of discovery brought to life with modern-day animation and song; it is for this reason I purchased the soundtrack album. No other production company seems to use so much care in compiling their feature presentations as Disney have on many occasion; "Pocahontas" is one of the greatest animated feature films made by Disney, and this is why I always turn to Disney for my Children's entertainment - the care in ensuring the utmost is put into producing, to result in the highest quality family entertaiment around, and I'm not alone here!

Come on, buy this record - it has all the orignal beautiful music from the movie, plus "Colours of the Wind" sung by the author, Vanessa Williams. As with CDs such as "The Lion King" soundtrack, it includes the wonderful, heartwarming, sombre background music setting a perfect ambient, peaceful mood.

Thouroughly recommended. - Deserving of far more than 5 *s!
