Amazon.co.uk Review The two-disc retrospective The Essential Leonard Cohen traces the Canadian bard's musical maturity from poet and novelist who sang a little, to multidimensional artist whose oracular vocals and increasingly rich arrangements are every bit as compelling as his verse. Even when Cohen came to prominence through the 1960s songcraft of "Suzanne" and "Bird on a Wire", the "folksinger" tag never really fit. Later highlights ranging from the deadpan drollery of "Tower of Song" and "Everybody Knows" to the apocalyptic anthemry of "First We Take Manhattan" and "Democracy" suggest that other labels might be more appropriate: cabaret surrealist, spiritual gadfly, sensual prophet, agent provocateur. Cohen chose the selections, drawing more than half of the 31 tracks from three landmark albums--his 1967 debut Songs of Leonard Cohen, 1988's I'm Your Man, and 1992's The Future--along with four from 2001's Ten New Songs. The collection justifies its title as deep as it goes, though it's a shame that Cohen's commercial profile couldn't justify the more elaborate box set his artistry warrants (one that would at least include lyrics and musician credits). Those who sample the consistently inspired music here might come to the conclusion that everything Cohen records is essential. --Don McLeese

The Essential Leonard Cohen July 28, 2010 Enzo Fantastic double album. Bought two of these now -one for the house and another for the car. Wonderful to play on shuffle mode as it is like a completely different recording each time. Very difficult to select best tracks as both my wife and I like them all. In my mind this is better than the 'Best of' album.
The Essential Leonard Cohen - Beautiful, thoughtful music March 22, 2010 Victor Tugelbend (Hull, England) Cohen has had a long career spanning form the late 60's to the present day. As a result he has made many tracks that fans would consider `essential', and any effort to compile a best of album is likely to result in some disagreement.
However, I feel that Columbia have done a great job on track selection, with selections form right across Cohen's career right up to and including `Ten Songs'.
The tracks on offer here show just how consistent Cohen has been over the years. Right from the beautiful `Suzanne' - a great track for any album to open with - through to `Love Itself', this is track after track of seemingly simple, yet also deep and complex music. Great melodies, lyrics to make you think, excellent guitar work and distinctive vocals. You'd have to have a heart of stone not to like this material.
This is an excellent collection, and a great way for newcomers to get into Cohen's music. Be warned though - I can almost guarantee that after listening to this you will start to collect all his albums!
NICE TO LISTEN WHILE DRIVING December 16, 2009 p j o sullivan PURCHASED THIS CD RECENTLY AND WHAT A GOOD CD IT IS.COHENS DEEP TONES MAKE YOU CONCENTRATE ON EVERY WORD AND YOU GET REALLY INVOLVED WITH THE LYRICS. A DOUBLE CD ALSO GREAT, DONT BE WITHOUT THIS GEM.P.J.
leonard has moved on .... September 8, 2009 I. robinson (hampshire) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have come incredibly late in his and my life to appreciating Leonard Cohen, having seen him live in 2008 and then more recently on video 'Songs from a Life' - I guess I have the imprint of a larger and richer musical production in my mind.
So - this studio CD is for the purists, the long term fans who I thank for - as the man himself says - 'keeping the songs alive.'
essential cd August 27, 2009 Mary Mccarthy (Ireland) bought this cd before I went to see Leonard Cohen in concert in Dublin
