Editorial Reviews:

From Amazon.com
Tommy had the dubious distinction of being the first-ever rock opera; however, it's none the worse for that, Ken Russell's adaptation notwithstanding. Due largely to Pete Townshend's skill as a songwriter and composer, Tommy tells a coherent story and includes quality rock and roll at the same time, an impressive feat by itself. While surprisingly more linear than the later Quadrophenia, Tommy boasts several songs that stand up well on their own, including the classic "Pinball Wizard," "The Acid Queen," "I'm Free," and "Sally Simpson." Much of the rest doesn't make much sense lyrically unless you listen to the entire album, but you'll probably want to do that anyway, preferably with the lights low and the stereo cranked. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars An absolute classic   January 3, 2008

I read recently that The Who thought that Tommy was unfinished and wanted to add more electric guitar but time and financial constraints dictated otherwise. If this is the case, then lets be thankful for once to the schedulers as the sparseness of the arrangements play a major role in making Tommy such a brilliant album.

The strengths of Tommy are many. Musically it contains a fine selection of melodic songs with brilliant harmonies and superb playing in particular by Pete Townsend (often on acoustic guitar) and John Entwhistle on sympathetic melodic bass - before he felt the need to over-complicate his playing. Add to this Entwhistle's effective, occasional brass hangings, Roger Daltrey's vocals and Keith Moon's spectacular but not yet over-indulgent drumming and you have a band at the absolute peak of their powers. Then of course there are the lyrics...

Not quite the first rock opera but definitely the best, Tommy tells the story of a traumatised "deaf, dumb and blind kid" who suffers horrendous abuse before he is amazingly cured as a young adult and is subsequently treated as something of a Messiah, a role he ultimately rejects. The story looks at religion, fame, exploitation and so much more though, unlike Pink Floyd's The Wall, the lyrical concepts don't weigh the album down with weariness due to some wit in the words and the strength of the music.

Virtually every song on Tommy is excellent though some particular highlights for me range from the famous Pinball Wizard and We're Not Gonna Take it to the lesser know Christmas and Cousin Kevin via the Overture and Underture instrumentals. The Deluxe Edition contains a second disc of out-takes and demo's including the band joking through Sally Simpson and the fairground organ instrumental demo of Tommy's Holiday Camp.

All brilliant stuff, enhanced further, as already noted, by the acoustic sparseness of the arrangements. Tommy finds The Who at the absolute intellectual, artistic and musical peak of their powers. Far reaching yet accessible, it is a sure-fire classic which should find a place in any serious music fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars a new lease of life for tommy...   December 10, 2005

christmas eve 1969 (or was it 1970..?).....after spending most of the afternoon in the pub i had something left of my first christmas bonus and found myself in the local record shop. browsing through the racks i came across TOMMY and, though I was somewhat inebriated and it was something i wouldn't have normally bought as i'd never seen much publicity for the album, it was the WHO and the money was burning a hole in my pocket. double albums weren't cheap in those days and on the way home i pondered on the wisdom of my purchase. i needn't have worried, the music was fantastic... i'd never heard any thing like it before. my elder brother scorned it, saying it doesn't sound like the who, but i couldn't stop playing it for months (...years!). there seemed to be two camps of who fans (not so much nowadays), before tommy and after tommy. the who, verging on bankruptcy, came up with this work of genius which took them up into the stratosphere, leaving mod bands like the small faces, the kinks and the move far behind, filling football stadiums and setting themselves among the greats like led zeppelin and the stones. the immediacy and freshness of the original recording comes through brilliantly on SACD, the original recording was great but this is like hearing it for the first time. keith's drums and cymbals come crashing through the speakers like never before, john's bass, pete's guitar parts and roger's vocals are so clear you can literally almost see them. overall a highly recommended recording, SACD is definately the way forward if they keep to this standard of remastering.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Journey: The Genius of The Who   June 16, 2005

Many a time I have tried to sit down and make a list of my top ten favourite albums of all time, some obvious choices would be: The Yes Album, Blue, The Wall. There is no choice so obvious to me as Tommy. Tommy is without a doubt the greatest album ever written.

The Who were oblivious at the time but this album, like many of the other great albums, was going to save them from bankruptcy and their label dropping them. Pete Townshend spent many a night recording the demo tapes for this on his own home studio. Little did he know, Tommy, which went through several other possible names such as Amazing Journey, was to be his greatest success and to save him from obscurity.

This album is remniscent of a classical style of music. This is the genius of Tommy; throughout the album, you will hear the same riff used with many many variations. Right from the very first track, Townshend and Co. grip the listener with a stunning display of musical mastery. The seamless flow of these tracks only serves to add to the already great album.

If you are expecting a soundtrack to the film Tommy, this is not it! Although it bares the same tracks (for the most part) as Tommy: The Movie, there are som very big differences. Namely, alot of the tracks are not as long as their filmed counterparts, differences to the story line are also included.

In order to compensate for these differences; Daltrey, Moon,Entwistle and Townshend produce the most stunning performance ever recorded - without question.

Every time I hear this album, i am astounded at the brilliance of the technical merit of Townshend's guitar, Entwistle's Horn and Bass, Moon's drumming antics (and rather scary singing for a few tracks) aswell as Daltrey's brilliant vocals.

This album should be a part of every person's CD Collection. If you have not heard this album, it is worth every penny! The Iconic Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, I'm Free and others ensure it!

Get this album!

5 out of 5 stars Surround heaven!   June 6, 2005

I've got, and love, the surround SACDs of Bat out of Hell and Dark Side of the Moon. This is a similar album, in that it needs no introduction to most people. The surround mix is absolutely wonderful throughout. I note other reviewer's criticisms of the stereo mix in comparison to previous CD releases; clearly it's a matter of taste, but this is the first ever release taken from the original stereo masters (which went missing for many years) as heard by the band. You may prefer other releases, but this release is the authentic one. An ESSENTIAL buy for anyone with an SACD surround system.

5 out of 5 stars Finest version yet   November 26, 2003

Finally mastered from the totally original tapes this really is THE ultimate version of Tommy. Pete Townshend has done a cracking job of the 5.1 mix with clarity and seperation so accurate that it'll make your ears bleed! Pinball Wizard is an especially good example where the acoustic intro comes from one side only for the electric guitar to literally jump out from somewhere else. Out of all the SACDs I have this must be the best in terms of mix quality and the way the various instrumentation is distributed to the 5 channels. The bass is pretty forceful too but never overpowering. All in all the over-equalised sound of the previous remaster is removed and in a way it sounds like the instruments have been set free from any restraints. I haven't yet played the standard CD layer so I can't comment on what the previous reviewer said. If you don't have an SACD player yet then if you are a Who fan you're doing yourself a serious disservice. This disc is a good enough reason to invest. Here's to a few more Who classics being given the same treatment.
