Amazon.co.uk Review
On their debut album Inside In/Inside Out, Brighton band The Kooks demonstrate a real potential for greatness. That's because this young band have two crucial things going for them: a wealth of ideas and an awareness of their place in their musical lineage. Which is why it's probably so appropriate that Inside In/Inside Out was recorded at The Kinks' Ray Davies' own studio--Kooks frontman Luke Pritchard, like Davies, seems to have a knack for churning out catchy guitar-pop nuggets. So, after the brief and mellow intro of "Seaside", the album really kicks in to grab the listener by the ears, with each song better than the previous. Sofa Song" is a strumming, singalong bounce, but "Eddie's Gun" is a rough-around-the-edges jangly rocker, and "Ooh La" is a mellow and melodic stroll, all building up to the downright funky tracks like "Matchbox" and "Naive". nd so it continues, through 14 songs, propelled by Pritchard's hiccupping vocal delivery and Hugh Harris's rather excellent guitar playing. The Kooks had a lot of hype prior to the release of Inside In/Inside Out; rather impressively, they've more than managed to live up to it. --Ted Kord

some good songs on the kooks first outing here. 'naieve' 'she moves in her own way' and ooh la' are excellent. Keep a look out for these boys from Brighton, they're going places love it!

5 out of 5 stars Just Great   September 4, 2007

There are a lot of bands with a similar sound to the Kooks, kind of a generic early 21st century rock sound, every era since the 60's has had a kind of rock/guitar standard sound of the moment. What separates the OK from the great is the quality of the songs. Kooks are a young band this is their first album and only a fool would judge it to be anything but quality. If this is the genre of music that you like, or if you've liked any of the Kooks singles that you've heard, this is a completely safe purchase. Whilst none of it is startlingly original the overall standard of the songs is high, the whole thing is pleasingly upbeat and the album stands up to a lot of listening. For me one of the best albums of the last 12 months. Also as they are such a young band I expect their next album to be even better!

4 out of 5 stars Not at all bad   August 24, 2007

I couldn't disagree more with the opinion that this album only has one good track on it. It's not a classic album - not by a long shot - but it's a decent debut with some pretty catchy songs. My favourites are 'Seaside', 'Ooh La' and the two biggest singles 'You Don't Love Me' and 'She Moves in her Own Way'. But there are some other good songs on there too (and yeah, a couple that aren't quite so great)...

I guess it depends on the expectations you bring to an album like this. With the last couple of years in British music being, in my opinion, pretty dire, this was a nice surprise for me. A bit raw around the edges perhaps, but well put together, decent song writing, and some impressive musicianship (I saw a live acoustic version of 'Ooh La' on what I think was the Glastonbury coverage last year, and the guitar playing on that was fantastic - that's what convinced me to buy the cd).

Good to sing along to. Enjoyable. Puts a bit of faith back in the British music scene. You can't ask for an awful lot more than that can you?
