Beautiful, haunting voice & incredibly moving lyrics June 19, 2008

I would never have described myself as a fan of jazz, which is a label that has been attached to Melody Gardot. But I saw her on Jools Holland & was utterly blown away by her incredible voice & this kind of music really helps to bring it out.
Her amazing voice is brought out well on this EP, which is more stripped down than 'Worrisome Heart'. That's because it was recorded at her bedside, while she was recovering from being hit by a car. The lyrics are very personal & moving, as Gardot offers emotional reassurance to her (naturally) concerned mother in 'Momma' & an incredibly poignant version of 'Some Lessons'. The way that her voice is as flawless as on her studio album is strong testament to her talent - proof that the blues are at their most beautiful when, sadly, they can trace their roots to suffering.
In addition to the 6 tracks listed, it also contains a seventh gem - a stripped-down version of the single 'Goodnite'. I assume this is some kind of hidden track, although it came up automatically when I inserted the CD into my PC.
