A classic album is born July 21, 2008 Only recently discovered Foy courtesy of Terry Wogan. Hesitated before admitting that but credit where credit's due! Also managed to see him at the Glee Club in Birmingham on 1st July! ("First of July" is track 8"). He was one of the best performers I've ever seen. That right balance between being true to the recording and not mimicking it. And such a personable, friendly and engaging bloke! This album includes a wide variety of styles from the no nonsense rythm and blues of "Shed a Little Light" to the wonderful, complex storytelling of "Gabriel and the Vagabond". The latter is really moving and uplifting and you'll be singing along in no time. My favourite track changes week by week which is always a good sign. Currently its the last song "Two Shades of Hope". Very insightful without being crass or mawkish. If you let the track run on you get a really sweet rendition of Foy's little daughter Ella singing "You are my Sunshine". Foy's vocal style is unique. A bit of gravel but not over done; full of passion and committment but quite precise as well. I particularly like the way he doesn't try to hide his Northern Irish accent under an ersatz American voice like so many artists do. A lovely example is the way he sings the word "towel" in "Indiscriminate Act of Kindness" and his pronounciation of the words "man" and "hand" make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Very effective. This will be an album that people will keep discovering for years.
Just discovered the wonderful Foy May 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have recently discovered Foy Vance and his beautiful Hope album - completely fell in love with his rootsy blues and soul churning lyrics. I was lucky enough to catch him play live last month and was completely blown away by his stage presence and talent. Quite overwhelming! He used his basic guitar pedal set up to create atmospheric and jerky riffs to accompany that beautiful voice. If in doubt just buy this, it wont dissapoint and go see him live, while you can still catch him in small, intimate spaces
Awesome February 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a literally awe inspiring album - one to really lift the spirits. Foy is a master craftsman who obviously cares deeply about his music . If you are looking for music that has something to say this is it - get on board. If you think these songs are great, to see him play live is a privilege.
Another wee Northern Irish star! February 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great stuff. Being from Nortehrn Ireland I'm a sucker for local acts; snow patrol, duke special, van morisson, ash, six star hotel etc..
But I loaned the CD to my friends at uni in england and they all LOVED it. And so will you.
Its not often that as soon as a CD comes out I can tell you I will always appreciate it but this CD is a new classic.
The songwriting is so deep and meaningful, foy's unique voice really does speak straight from the heart.
I could constantly listen to this CD, and would strongly reccommend it to anyone.
He's not the new Van, he's better.
A must buy.
I look forward to the next one.
How many talents can one man have? January 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I first became aware of Foy at a Duke Special gig last year - he came on to do backing vocals to one of the tracks. I thought he had a great voice. I was right about that, but it misses out so much of his talent.
When I first got the album, I listened to the first two tracks and was slightly worried that Foy was content just to sing great rock-soul tunes without thinking beyond that genre. As I listened on, the sheer depth and breadth of this man's talent became obvious; not just the range and power of his voice (reminiscent of Van Morrison and Joe Cocker among others), but the quality of the songwriting is breathtaking.
The best tracks are the narrative songs - good old-fashioned storytelling on tracks like 'Gabriel and the Vagabond' and 'Indiscriminate Act of Kindness'. And they're not just good stories, they're uplifting and spiritual in a way that raises goosebumps every time I listen to them; the sheer belief in humanity's salvation through kindness and through sharing hope. A message that I'm totally behind, and makes me think of changing the way I live my life every time I listen to them. Which is, at the moment, every day and every chance I get.
I cannot commend this man's talent enough. Foy Vance is a name which should be up there in lights with the greats.
