 The better record of The Joshua Tree tour. May 25, 2008
The live DVD isn't quite the full set of the Paris show, as the three cover versions they did are absent; the opening tracks "Stand By Me" and "C'mon Everybody" are omitted (which is why the guitar Edge walks onstage with isn't the one he plays during "I Will Follow"). They also did a version of "Help" in between "Electric Co" and "Bad" which is also missed out.
Despite that, it's a much better representation of the Joshua Tree tour than the rather confused and meandering "Rattle And Hum".
Cleaner and Clearer but not for everyone January 17, 2008

This remastering of The Joshua Tree is not radically different from the original. The sound is perhaps cleaner and clearer and all the songs benefit from this freshening up - particularly "Streets" which is a markedly better song. Nevertheless, this upgrade is probably only worth buying if you are a rabid fan, or don't own the original.
U2's B sides have always been better than most other bands' A list material and the bonus CD of extras is worth having - if you don't already have it, or are replacing worn out vinyl. Again though, I wouldn't say it was an essential purchase if you already have the B sides. "Wave of Sorrow" is nice but the other outtakes are nothing particularly special.
It is the DVD that is the real joy in this collection and I agree with another reviewer who says it should be available separately. A youthful looking band (Bono without sunglasses) are clearly having a whale of a time in Paris and the concert is an uplifting joy. The Old Grey Whistle Test documentary is fine - a mix of music videos and footage of the band relaxing in the US. It's nothing special though - a sort of "outtakes of Rattle and Hum". The two music videos too are both fine.
I'm a fan of U2's early material in particular and I like this upgrade. The remastering has made the sound a little less "80's" and a little more modern feeling. I hope their first four albums get the same treatment. However, if you are not a fan of this album, this reissue will do little for you I suspect.

For those of us back in 82 who considered Bono a big pompous tosser in stack-heeled cowboy boots, this album came as no surprise. The earnest stars-in-their-eyes desperation of the songwriting, the 'tonight, Matthew I am going to be Gram Parsons', the inanity of not overly talented musicians trying to sound like they were dumbing down. As Bob Monkhouse said, sincerity's the key,once you can fake that, you've made it. This album is for people who like formats, not music and have their record collections in alphabetical order. It's a bit like 'Lord of the Rings', it's fine for it to be your favourite book when you're fourteen but when you reach forty?

In response to P. Livingstone's comment 'where is Streets'. Hard to believe, 'Where The Streets' song was not performed that night and so has not be excluded. The DVD is as per set list. The Boxset production is a thing of great beauty. What a collectors gift to fans. I look forward to the next re-releases of the other albums as promised by band manager Paul McGuinness recently on a radio interview.
I love the previously unreleased track 'Wave Of Sorrow' what a hidden gem.

I have to say that fans like me already own most of the good studio material on this set.
However, that said - the DVD is interesting, although U2 seems to continuously plunder their back-catalogue this live show from Paris in 1987 reminded me so much of the shows I went to myself on that tour in London, Dublin and Edinburgh (when I was young and thought the band were writing just for me)...it is a wonderful thing to see the band again as they were before they hit the big time - just on the brink of super stardom - and it's strange now to see a concert by a world-class band promoting one of the decade's biggest albums but no huge video screens - yeah those were the days :)
One disappointing omission from the concert is Where The Streets Have No Name, from my memory this particular set would have started with 'Stand By Me', and Streets would have been before or after Pride .... so WHERE IS IT ? This one song defined the bands live shows for the next decade, and for it to be missing from the only official dvd of the tour is very strange indeed (perhaps Bono lost his voice on that song?)
Those minor issues aside, THIS IS THE ONLY OFFICIALLY RELEASED FOOTAGE OF THE JOSHUA TREE TOUR!
Plus it was nice to be able to watch once again (20 years later) the documentaries shot by the band during that stage of their career such as 'Outside it's America' (which I originally saw on BBC2's Whistle Test program) and chronicles the bands tour, including scenes of Bono and the Edge playing 'The Lost Highway' in some Country and Western dive in the midwest of America plus of course the videos for Spanish Eyse, Still Haven't Found, and 'In Gods Country'.
So if you're a fan, and would like to see what the band were like on that tour, promoting the breakthrough album that would ultimately catapult them to the dizzying heights of worldwide mega stardom and make possible all that came later (Zoo TV Tour, POPMART, anyone?) then YES, BUY IT.
But if you're not interested in seeing the band from that tour, then this Deluxe set hmay not be for you.
