past, present and future August 27, 2008 I have all Journey cd's but I did not know they had recruited a new singer. Honestly if you don't look at the cover you will be fooled into believing that Steve Perry has come back, at least for the first songs. Afterwards the new guy - Pineda - makes his mark and he is a jewel they must absolutely keep: he can really emulate Steve Perry, and brings life into the new songs. And the latter are perfect, seems the Schon/Cain duet has received a lot of inspiration from having this new singer, most of the new songs are really good. The CD is organised roughly in a "one rock - one slow" song pattern, and it is just great, nothing more to say. Journey is definitely back in top form, I just HOPE they come to Europe !
Outstanding Revelation August 8, 2008 Classic Journey is the only way to describe this....Start to finish superb hooks/melodies/riffs/keyboards..soaring solos from Neal..Not going to compare these songs to past recordings as they have their own place in Journey history....Ive seen it with other bands (Kiss for example) where they can continue without important original members and Arnel is an excellent substitute for Steve...Mr Perry is always going to be the original crooner but Arnel has his own qualities...Classic AOR that Schon admits himself in the sleevenotes " we have something special here"(as in the band)..Welcome back guys and well done...If they dont crack the States again with this material I will buy the next album !!!!
Back to their best? August 7, 2008 Confession time: Being a Journey fan from many years past, I thought they were a washed up, pale imitation of their once greatness. Reverlation has made me realise how wrong I was, and how this can stand up against any previous era music from themselves (Journey helpfully provide a re-recorded hits CD within Revelation just for this purpose!). It may not be pushing any boundries or reshaping their sound, but this is pure class.
A "Revelation" pure and simple July 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If there is anyone out there who is contemplating buying this album and is in two minds whether or not to do so. Then this review is directed at you. I can't say it any more simply than this: With the exception of "Escape", THIS IS THE BEST JOURNEY ALBUM EVER. Arnel Pineda is truly a superb vocalist who has laid the ghost of Steve Perry finally to rest. I actually think that Pineda's voice has better timbre and is not as one dimensional as Perry's tended to be at times. All of the new compositions on this awesome album are simply breathtaking, in fact, words fail me. Well done Neal and thank god for YouTube. Journey on my friends ! Until the next time. Henry Oliver
One for the non-Journey fans July 16, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Let's face it all these other reviews are from long-standing Journey fans who can name drop with the best of them and regurgitate stuff they have read in music mags about how they found their new vocalist. And don't forget the track by track reviews, in depth or what?
So what is going to attract the new fan? How about the fact that this is the best AOR (and that's what it is folks!) album in the past 20 years. melodic, heavy where need be, and brilliantly realised, every song on here (and this isn't including the re-recorded tracks, which are brilliant by the way!)is instantly memorable which is a rare beast indeed. These guys haven't tried to be anything they aren't, other than the best melodic rock band in the world!
