Eight years. It's like they never went away! November 14, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
And after all this time they're as boring and predictable as ever! Great work, Angus!
Boring! November 6, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have a pretty good collection of heavy rock albums including a fair few AC/DC. I still like heavy rock music because it is generally exciting and is great to play in the car and it reminds me of my misspent youth etc. I'm 42 now and have always had eclectic tastes, nearly all types of music make up a collection spanning 4 decades of collecting. I felt confident the new much anticipated Ac/Dc would hit the spot but it doesn't. I think they are great live, though rather slower and more static than they were, but the new album doesn't contain even one song that would belong on a best of. If this is the best they can come up with then stick to playing live and forget about recording any new albums I say.
Less Boogie and Strut. more Plod November 2, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Same as many here - have every album since dirty deeds- and with 15 tracks and an eight year wait I thought maybe this would have more on it to want to play again - but apart from Money Made and Big Jack , the riffs dont seem special , the choruses are average and it finally feels like the end of the road for the greatest boogie band ever. All I made me do was to dig out Powerage again to remind myself how brilliant they were. Even the best things finally come to an end.
Best since "The Razor's Edge" & if it ain't broke, don't fix it... October 30, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Yes, the 8 years between records have been worth the wait for AC/DC...I liked their last coupla records, "Stiff Upper Lip" & "Ballbreaker", but didn't love em as much as "Back In Black", etc...the last one I LOVED was 1990's "The Razor's Edge"...perfect mix of raunch & direct catchy melody & pure rock & roll righteousness. I still think "Thunderstruck" is one of their best-ever tunes.
Now, "Black Ice", I had high hopes for, and I was keeping my fingers crossed that it would be better than "Stiff Upper Lip", which, while good, was in-the-end, disappointing...too bluesy and not enough catchy rock for my taste.
This is the record I had been waiting for...solid, track-for-track great, it doesn't drag AT ALL (remarkable for a 15-song album, even for a band as killer and classic as AC/DC accused of being samey), and it has some fresh twists too...sure, it has their trademark sound, but I hear some different stuff too, always a plus.
AC/DC is the only other band besides the Ramones where it's best if they don't alter their sound too much, the if-it-ain't-broke mentality, because they have such a perfect patented rock & roll "formula" that cannot be improved. Because such is the case, it's OK if they take a long time between records, otherwise it'd be overkill and would burn out their audience...and 8 years just left everyone hungry for new stuff...that combined with their catalogue being shifted and reissued beautifully by Sony BMG in 2003 & 2005, and a NYC show promoting the reissues. Maybe the reason for the long wait is cuz they had to wait some years to ride out their Elektra/Warner contract...this album was SUPPOSED to be their final album in their prior contract, but they signed with Sony BMG in 2003 and had a reissue program in place...I don't think they wanted to release this album on Elektra/Warner, not with a new Sony BMG deal in place...best bet, ride out the contract and wait. "Ballbreaker" & "Stiff Upper Lip" had to be waited on to be reissued, as both were contracted to be on Elektra/Warner for a certain period of time before they could be reissued, then they were in 2005...then the new album when the band was free & clear from Warners to record for Columbia/Sony BMG...
Wow, did this contractual waiting stuff work in the band's favour!!! Now, people want some new stuff, and boy, did AC/DC deliver...they sound both hungry and relieved to be free of prior obligations!!!! "Black Ice" is just awesome...the 1st single "Rock & Roll Train" kicks butt with that catchy chorus, a great vocal by Brian and killer gang harmonies...sounds just great on the radio...I was keeping my fingers crossed that the rest of "Black Ice" would be just as grand...and it is, oh yes it is. I LOVE this record...I love this band. So do a LOT of people...it sold 784,000 copies its 1st week in the US, becoming the band's second-ever #1 album, AC/DC's first since their 1981 amazing classic "For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)"!!!
It flows nicely, great track sequence, and there are some instant classic strewn throughout...besides "RnR Train", my faves are "Spoilin' For A Fight", "Big Jack", "Anything Goes" (which weirdly reminds me off "Born In The USA-era Bruce Springsteen...could be that Brendan O'Brien influence as he works with Bruce now), "Smash N Grab"...but those are all in the 1st half...the second half is almost conceptual & experimental without straying too far from AC/DC's sound..."Stormy May Day" is bluesy with some nice slide guitar, "Rock N Roll Dream" starts slow & atmospheric but has a rocking chorus, "She Likes Rock & Roll" is like a funk rock dance track and it really works, and "Black Ice" is moody and quite a cool finisher.
This album was supposed to be a double album and called "Strap It On", and I hear the band recorded more than enough material with BOB that a quick followup to "Black Ice" will be out within 2 years...they just have to put the finishing touches and sequence it nicely.
Let's hope this is true and we don't have to wait another 8, even though this album was worth the wait.
Can't wait for the NYC show Novemer 12th!!!
Disapointing, but still got some great songs. October 29, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Well, I havn't been an AC/DC fan for long i'm 17 and got into 'em about 2 years ago. Since then i've got alot of their stuff their best being their earlier stuff with Bon Scott. Brian Johnson is a good vocalist but his vocals get really irritating sometimes, but his debut Back In Black was too be honest a classic. Onto this album.
The album does start of great with the first 5 songs being really good rockin' songs after that it just starts to get boring. We all know Rock and Roll Train is a great typical AC/DC song an addictive riff. THe other good songs are Stormy May Day & Black Ice has a cool intro by Angus Young but when it kicks in it just isn't anything different. I was expecting so much more with the hype and I thought the AC/DC's I have are great (Thunderstuck kicks arse). The drumming is possibly the most boring thing on this album it's the same beat in every song it's really repetitive and not very rock n roll.
Though their are some great things about this album which are the songs I mentioned, hopefully the rest will grow on me in time but at this time these are my thoughts. I just don't get it though so many great bands have released amazing new albums bands like Trivium, Dragonforce, Slayer, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden(2006) Guns N Roses new album from what i've heard sounds great. AC/DC if you've run out of material either get better at what you do or just give up instead releasing mediocre releases. I might see AC/DC in Dublin I dunno.
