Amazon.co.uk Review Amy MacDonald is that proverbial old head on young shoulders, a Scottish singer-songwriter who, despite her tender 19 years, writes songs with the grace, wisdom and proficiency of one with a score more on the clock. As influenced by The Libertines as any venerable old folk hand, the eleven songs on This Is the Life combine a traditional, acoustic folk-rock sound with a youthful spirit and self-assured lyrics that veer between the observational and the confessional. "Poison Prince" is a jagged guitar strut dedicated to some Doherty-like bad boy, a song every bit as pathos-laden as The Libertines at their doomed, romantic best with a closing treatise to find "An upbeat song/So we can dance the night away", while "Mr Rock & Roll" begins as a wryly withering jibe at some perennial party animals, but by the chorus, has softened into a subtle, touching tale of human coupling. MacDonald's age doesn't seem to have been an impediment; "Youth of Today", reportedly written when she was 15, is one of the better tracks here, while "Footballer's Wife" is a clear-headed attack on vapid Barbie Doll celebrity that suggests this girl is very much on the right track. "Rolling Stone, here I come, watch out everyone/I'm singing my song" she sings on "Let's Start a Band". Let that be a warning to you. --Louis Pattison

Fantastic Voice June 1, 2010 MV (Suffolk, England) Bought this album after hearing the title track 'This is The Life', not expecting too much but i think this album is fantastic. Stand-out tracks for me are:
Mr Rock and Roll
This Is The Life
Poison Prince
Barrowland Ballroom
A Wish For Something More
All of these are great upbeat songs which i loved, her voice and the acoustic guitar work great together, not to take away from the others but these were my favourites. The one disc edition is more than worth it but the two disc edition comes with some great Acoustic and Live versions of the singles where you can really hear the scottish accent come out. Also the track 'Rock Bottom' is one of the bonus tracks on the second disc which i thought was easily worthy of being on the album so the two disc edition is excellent value.
If you like folk style guitar and a strong voice then check this out!
Brilliant album - great price! May 30, 2010 I Love My Music (Scotland, UK) Bought this for my hubby to listen to in the car during his commute to work. This is a brilliant album - all of Amy's hit songs that you know and love are on it. Great for singing along to! Makes you feel good listening to it.
A Rose among the Thistles May 24, 2010 Shona Paterson (Scotland) I bought this for my husband - and ended up buying another one so I could play it in my car! Amy Macdonald is different, refreshing and great to listen to - and I have it playing for weeks at a time!
Brilliant May 15, 2010 John Lilburne (London, United Kingdom) Superb, and a debut album too. Add to collection immediately, or enternally live out a sad and essentially worthless existence.
A superb debut April 23, 2010 Strat Amy MacDonald's music is very, very good. The first track sets the tone for a great album, whilst tracks such as "Youth of Today" and "This is the Life" (which were released as singles) are also excellent. It is hard to think of a weak track, in my opinion, because there is such variety in the sound. Take, for example, "Let's Start A Band" which, despite sounding very similar to a previous track and therefore drawing criticism from some quarters, is an unusual, but clever, variation on a theme. All the tracks were written, or co-written, by MacDonald and you can hear that she has a talent for writing good material - a trend which is also continued on her latest album "A Curious Thing."
