Ridin' high with the four horsemen! January 19, 2010 Patrick M Cunningham (Ireland) Just when I thought that the headless children, crimson idol, still not black enough, and helldorado couldn't be beaten Blackie comes back with this monster album. From the first track "Crazy" (which the guitar riff reminds me of "Wild Child") is the opener for one hell of a record. There are two cover versions on this album which is a bit of a down fall but having said that the cover of Deep Purple's "Burn" is absolutely brilliant and Blackie puts his own mark on it and made it his own. The final track "Promised Land" however has been covered to death over the years with Elvis even doing his own version of the Chuck Berry classic.
After saying all that there are some great moments on this record. The fore mentioned "Burn" will get you rockin' no problem but its the other tracks like "Live to die another day" and "Thunder Red" that really sees Blackie in flying form. The previous w.a.s.p. albums "Dominator, and The Neon God" might be a little lacking on the excitement side but their earlier albums like "Unholy Terror, Helldorado" all the way back to the very first w.a.s.p. album is w.a.s.p. at their very best (maybe its due to Chris Holmes being in the band and some one with whom Blackie could bounce idea's around with and those two have really collaborated on some of the best metal ever written...) But to get back to this album the reason I give it four stars is because of the last track which has been covered so many times over the years but over all this album really rocks.........
Same Same but shorter December 28, 2009 Mr. CS ASHTON (MK England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The 3 star rating here is in comparison to WASP's other offerings (Crimson Idol, Dominator etc) which are some of the truly finest, darkest, deep & meaningful musical works ever from such an underated band. Such are the high standards Blackie Lawless has set.
The problem with Babylon is that it's only a shade over 43mins long & this includes 2 covers(!) which left me wondering if Blackie rushed it to meet some deadline or just ran out of ideas. Either way it's a shame as there are some great tracks on here true to form, albeit with a few riffs & formulaic song structures that are just a little bit too similar to some of their other works, but then I guess that's not such a bad thing.
WASP on form!!! December 11, 2009 JohnO (Leicester, England) I hadn't really listened to WASP since Crimson Idol, then happened to listen to some of Dominator and Babylon on youtube and bought the albums. Both are excellent and the lyrics express Blackie's own slant on the world.
Babylon is a great successor to Dominator and if this band got their marketing right it would be up there in the decade's top rock albums.
If you haven't listened to WASP since their early stuff, this is a great album to re-aquaint yourself with the band.
As for the songs themselves:
1. Crazy - Play it loud, a superb sing-along headbanging song with interesting lyrics.
2. Live To Die Another Day - Good fast rock song.
3. Babylon's Burning - Awesome galloping song with Blackie's view on the state of the world today.
4. Burn - Top cover of the original Deep Purple song.
5. Into the Fire - A WASP ballad but not by any means soft.
6. Thunder Red - The apocalypse set to music, the sound is straight off their first album - punchy, rocky and fast.
7. Seas of Red - Great guitar and pacing drums, lyrically its not as strong as the others but who cares, just play it loud.
8. Godless Run - A strange ballad, a prayer of repentance that raises the hair on the back of your neck. Yes, its awesome.
9. Promised Land - Blackie does a great Elvis impersonation and although its not in keeping with the sentiment of the rest of the album is a great fun sounding song.
These are just my views, buy the album and make your own mind up.
The boys are back!!!! November 22, 2009 l1dge (UK) I've been listening to W.A.S.P for a long time and I have to be honest and say I thought they were done. The last couple of albums I thought were ok, not outstanding, just ok, but Babylon marks a return to the old days of The Last Command, Inside the Electric Circus and Headless Children. This album absolutely rocks!!! Welcome back Blackie!!!
Excellent Effort by Blackie November 15, 2009 M. G. Chisholm (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
W.A.S.P - has there ever been a band (well Blackie Lawless) who have been so overlooked and have so underachieved? I sometimes wonder if the only reason WASP are not mentioned in the same breath as some of the much more successful bands of the same era is that WASP overdid the shock tactics early on. Seriously, WASP are a great band that have over the years put out some truly wonderful rock music that can stand up with the best classics. I mean - the album Headless Children is by any standards a classic. Blackie can sing and play better than the likes of Motley Crue for sure, yet WASP has not really been a force for some time. It's a crying shame given how excellent, thoughtful and damn great some of their songs have been over the years. Nope - I'm convinced that BL over-egged the blood, sex and gore aspect early on and many folks have dismissed this band because of it.
So the new album. Bloody great to be honest. One of Blackie's best efforts since Headless Children. I admit that in the intervening years there have been some good songs, but this album is probably the most consistent for a while. All the songs fit together well but stand up individually. Blackie is in fine singing form and the guitar work is catchy in the usual WASP way and very heavy in a traditional way. Not super fast but deep if that makes sense.
Stand out tracks for me would have to be the first one - Crazy and the very heavy Seas of Fire. Really top notch rock anthems. There are of course a couple of oddballs. Burn, the Deep Purple cover and Promised Land, a Chuck Berry tune. Both are a bit of fun given the WASP treatment.
Overall even if you have dismissed WASP for past misfires you should give this a listen because it's tuneful, heavy, classic rock.
