Amazon.co.uk Review
Supergroups come and go. A few (A Perfect Circle, Broken Social Scene) remain in the public consciousness but most are quickly - and perhaps justifiably - forgotten (hi Tinted Windows). This eponymous debut from Them Crooked Vultures – a supergroup comprised of Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme and Nirvana/Foo Fighters drummer Dave Grohl – is set to land in the former category. But only just. From the low-slung Led Zep-esqe boogie of opener "Nobody Loves Me & Neither Do I" the record thrusts and grinds its way through a series of blues-dominated rock tunes. It’s the very stuff you’d expect in fact, given their respective backgrounds. Fuelled by Jones’ sleazy riffs and Homme’s distinctive, dominating vocals Them Crooked Vultures features the occasional quirky aside: Doors tributes (“First Breath You Take After You Give Up"), psychedelic stoner trips ("Interlude With Ludes"), even some growling funk (“Scumbag Blues”). But it’s the macho material like "Mind Eraser, No Chaser," "Gunman” and "Dead End Friends" that ultimately prove most invigorating. Like Dead Weather’s recent Horehound, this is a surprisingly fun and well-executed album that’s wholly enjoyable even if it’s not essential.--Danny McKenna

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great.   July 15, 2010
Mr. M. L. Hawes
It's so difficult to review this record when, if like me, you love QOTSA, the Foo Fighters and Led Zep. All amazing bands with varied, but consistently brilliant out put.

This, in theory should be a cast iron classic, but for me it slips into the lazier side of Josh Hommes output. Over long songs, fairly tried and tested style and maybe two or three stand out songs that don't quite do enough. Yes the playing is excellent, you'd expect as much, but the songs just don't break new ground from their existing bands.

As a completist fan of QOTSA, I'd say go for it, but don't expect it to change the world.

4 out of 5 stars everybody destroyed this CD but me   June 10, 2010

At least in Italy, no magazine liked this CD actually; Josh Homme is hypertrophic as a musician as well as Jack White, Grohl should better make money with the Loose Fighters, and Jones is the coolest ever.

you know what? I wasn't looking for the CD of the century, but for something powerful, well done, and sort of stylish. This CD has all three and I listen to it almost daily.

Plainly said, buy it.

Hate to say it as I love all these guys but it's really not that good. If it were brought out by a bunch of guys new to the business then people would give it 3 stars saying stuff like "the guys can play but they need to work more on the songs and they might make it" Lacks a bit of feeling to be honest - play this and then stick on anything by Free and you'll see what I mean.

Brilliant, wonderful, fantastic...what more can I say!!! Dave & Josh on form, and a new respect for an older 'Pop Star'! Love it xx

I'd left this album rotting on my player for half a year and decided a revisit was in order. Give it a second chance with fresh ears. I'm afraid this time I've got the vulture cornered and it ain't flappin' away from me again. Time to meet your maker sonny.

I should love this album - `Songs for the Deaf' with Grohl on the sticks was my favourite Queens record (and my favourite rock record of 2002 to boot). Unfortunately though this record follows the established career curve of Josh Homme who is currently locked in a tail dive releasing increasingly uninspiring material. `Lullabies' was a drop-off after `SFTD' but still a coherent album packing some standouts. `Era Vulgaris' on the other hand showed the game was well and truly up - an absolute stinker, dog's dinner, call it what you will. This is nearly as bad.

What redeems this album ever so slightly is the inclusion of a couple of sturdy enough rockers in `Dead End Friends' and `Mind Eraser No Chaser'. Don't get me wrong they'd be weaker tracks on `SFTD' and even `Lullabies' so this is still faint praise. `Elephants' has some excellent moments (mostly contained within the first minute and a half before it locks into an unfortunate repeating pattern of utter tedium). The rest of the material is either stodgy dirge (`Spinning in Daffodils', `Warsaw') or gimmicky desperation (`Reptiles', `Caligulove').

Them Crooked Vultures do at least lock together effortlessly enough to sound like a proper band - just a shame that band has no passion, individuality or most damningly, any decent material. I'd be surprised if in the years to come this is ever mentioned in the same breath as `Sky Valley', `In Utero', `Physical Grafitti' or `Songs for the Deaf'.
