| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review The Richest Man In Babylon is the third full-length record from Thievery Corporation and finds this atmospheric Washington DC-based electronica duo indulging their esoteric chill-out impulses, blending far-flung world-music influences into a slick, high-production trip-hop cocktail. With an emphasis on keeping it organic, Thievery Corporation boast a radically different sound to their sterile, mechanical-sounding peers: "The Outernationalist" wraps its ethereal electronic synthplay in dub-tinged passages of trippy Rastfari mysticism, while "Facing East" blends wailing Bhangra vocals and whirling sitars into a hypnotic, downotempo whole. They're not exactly on the cutting-edge of this sort of thing--"Un Simple Histoire" and "All That We Perceive" could easily have slipped neatly onto Air's Moon Safari, while the rolling brass of "Liberation Front" bears an uncanny resemblance to Nightmares on Wax circa Car Boot Soul. But like the greatest bits of DJ Shadow's The Private Press, it's often hard to say exactly how these complex, soulful tracks were pieced together in the soulless environment of the studio. It's a cool, impressive achievement. --Louis Pattison

rich music April 23, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
loved this album. all the best of chillout with some surprises thrown in for good measure. 'heavens...' lovely mellow start to this album belies what is to come as it flows juicily into the lush bhangra beat of 'facing east' followed surprisingly by 'the outernationalist' more than welcome surprise i hasten to add. Short'interlude' literally before taking the listener anywhere and everywhere theyve ever wanted to go. Recommend listening to this on a long journey. Plug in the mp3 and....go.

My first foray into Thievery Corporation certainly won't be my last. A chance purchase after listening to a few sample tracks that sounded promising. On listening to the album in full, I'm convinced I've unearthed a true gem of global chill. Glorious production and some scintillating world inspired sounds, make this a truly classy cup of chill for the more discerning chill-meister. Maybe not revolutionary, but a refreshing mix of beats and blends that this genre has been crying out for. Top drawer.
Photography and Music Combination for the Soul May 12, 2004 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
The Thievery Corporation have released yet another stunner! The package combines a beautiful book of black and white photography with a CD of music inspired by it. The photography is often shocking, depicting scenes of violence against ethnic minority groups across the world, yet manages to find moments of beauty in humanity that transcends the atrocities depicted. Set against this mostly black and white photography is the accompanying CD of music. With lyrics inspired by a combination of left-wing peace ideology and rastafarian religion, and music infused with a wide range of international vocal styles (particularly the haunting Emiliana Torrini) and world rhythms, it brings the photographs into stark, thought-provoking contrast. Don't be put off by claims of coffee-table trash; this is a unique photography and music combination ideal for late evening debates on politics and peace.
More of the same April 28, 2004 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
A good follow up to The Mirror Conspiracy but very very similar in style;so much so that you could almost call this Mirror Conspiracy part 2. Theirstudio settings seem to not have moved but nonetheless they have providedsome nice sounds once again. A thorough and enjoyable album; but notbreaking any new ground
groovy thing April 5, 2004 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Thievery fans! I consider this album as my own personal favourite. I delayed buying it because I read a few reviews that were not too favourable. Now I am glad I bought it.The other reviewers here on Amazon about this album are right! This is one of the best albums I have heard. If you have just upgraded your Hi-Fi and want to hear what it is capable of, this is an excellent "test album" to buy as the CD mastering is the usual Thievery high standard. ie. It has amazing dynamic range and sounds more like an LP record than a CD, if you know what I mean. Or more like super audio CD! When is the next Thievery CD out? I will definately be buying.
