Amazon.co.uk Review Following the success of his recent Gilles Peterson In Brazil compilation, the world's number one dancefloor jazz/world aficionado returns with a similar jaunt through the groovier side of African music. Given the global popularity of Afrobeat and Afrofunk, it's no surprise to find a few classic of the genre here: Peter King's "Ajo", Manu Dibango's "New Bell" and Fela Kuti's "Ye Ye De Smell" are evergreens but are sandwiched between lesser known (but equally funky) tracks from the likes of Ethiopian jazz maestro Mulatu Astatqé, Feqadu Amae-Mesqel and Letta Mbulu. The second disc leans more towards modern African sounds and remixes. Kicking off with Masters At Work's anthemic reworking of Fela's "Expensive Shit", the CD shifts mercurially through Carl Craig's take on Cesaria Evora's "Angola" and IG Culture's mutated take on "Aso Kere", Thievery Corporation's "The Heart's A Lonely Hunter" and Osborne's "Afrika". All in all, there's plenty here to sate the most ardent African-groove enthusiast. --Paul Sullivan

A subtle introduction to the music of africa June 29, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this as it was highly reduced in price and what a bargain. It's a feast of grooves, good feeling vibes and earthly rhythms that will totally transform any views you may have that African music is for the musical elite only, it's amazing and I'd have no hesitation in saying BUY THIS NOW!
Gilles! Brilliant stuff, thanks for sticking it on. October 21, 2005 7 out of 11 found this review helpful
Yeah! These tracks just bang and bounce out of your speakers and you're off your chair and you grab your wife and you dance and what day is it?
