Amazon.co.uk Review With two solid albums already under his belt - Time To Grow and Dedicated - as well as two Brits, two Mobos and over 1.5 million album sales, UK vocalist Lemar has already earned his place as one of the UK's most adroit soul singers. Yet The Truth About Love, Lemar's third album, is even more of an accomplished work than its predecessors. Taking an old-school production approach - one producer (Brian Rawling), one band, one orchestra, one horn section and one mix engineer (Manny "Kanye West, Alicia Keys" Marroquin) - Lemar has recreated his classic soul sound more poignantly than ever, as evidenced by the infectious lead single "It's Not That Easy". Elsewhere he offers Sam Cooke style doo-wop ("Tick Tock"), heartfelt balladry ("Can't Live Without Each Others Love"), contemporary r & b ("Can't You See" feat. Styles P and Mica Paris), and a light-as-a-bubble, Motown style duet with Joss Stone, titled "Anniversary". Unlike The Lighthouse Family, Simon Webbe and others of that ilk, Lemar doesn't compromise his sound to the point of sterility. With its nostalgic songwriting, high caliber of musicianship, and Lemar's infectiously smooth, yet mature sounding voice, The Truth About Love is quite the modern classic.--Danny McKenna

There are new copies of this CD available on this site for 89p ! August 16, 2008 I think anyone who browses this site will soon realise that the price and quality of cds are rarely related. Here we have another example of a GREAT cd available for pennies. Marvin Gaye would have been happy to have recorded "It's not that easy", Mobile DJs around the country would be wise to invest in this disc for Lemar's duet with Joss Stone for Silver Wedding celebrations and as for the collaboration with the always excellent Mica Paris and Styles P, WOW !. You will rarely here such a complete Urban/R&B tune as "Can't you see".You may have guessed already but I RATE this album. It joins my list of bargain soul buys - see my other reviews for more excellent soul with change from a quid.
Some classic Soul here May 29, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
If you have ever felt that current R&B had settled too deep into a formula, then get some Lemar to restore your faith in Soul - on his second album, he described himself as a Soul man and he sets about proving it here.
Unashamedly referring back to classic Soul for the production, this set hangs together beautifully, building through several high points to a quite superb Soulful climax. Those high points include the single, "It Ain't Easy", and the wonderful "Just Can't Live Without Each Other Love", both of which had me marvelling at the man's voice, and his ability to bring the emotion from the song, without resorting to histrionics.
It is towards the end of the album, however, you will find three songs which, elevate Lemar to the position as the UK premier Soul singer. The gritty "Beauty Queen" has Lemar warbling over a guitar led backing track and some great backing vocals, while on the spare and beautiful "Your Face", his delivery does justice to the poignant lyric. Add to these the incredible "Caroline", which perfectly encapsulates the agonies of lost love and you have the makings of a modern classic.
This album has been a constant on my player since I bought it. If you have a liking for Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Alexander O'Neal or any of the other great Soul voices from the 70's and 80's, then this is for you - real Soul from right now. Lemar is that good.
Great Offering April 26, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I like the style of music that Lemar does, it's quite unique. There is certainly no doubt that his voice is one of the best of that type of music! This album has great songs, especially the duet with Styles P, which i love, and i think P puts in a great verse, this proves that lemar can cross to a more Hip Hop style, not just R&B! He has great skill and has the potential to be even bigger than he is, and i'm sure his name will go down in history! Definately get!
Hidden Gem February 20, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have owned this album for a while and it only recently came to my attention of how brilliant it is. Lacking in the more upbeat songs but heavy on the love ballads. Although love ballads are sometimes poor every single song on the album hits a note if you have ever felt for anyone. A must buy!!!! Smooth Silky Vintage Soul
Best Tracks Someone should tell you Its not that easy caroline
