Refreshing aaah ! May 7, 2008 Boundry busting Gilles girates his Technic for smiley faces...
CD1 foreward thinking house mix, starting out all soulful and vocal, then moving into his more trademark afro sound (with 4/4 this time though), then into jazzy house and deep techno. He gives the middle finger to his dissers that say he can't mix. Ok he's no Louie Vega or Sasha but he does a solid mix here.
CD2 his usual kinda black music gear. Very uplifting though 'think Jackie Brown' soul, jazz, b-boy.
CD3 unmixed exclusive gems, a good variety of house grooves for all you budding jocks out there. Very different and very fresh.
Highly recommended.
Contemporary house meets jazz funk and disco. April 7, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
With his Back in Brazil and Gilles Peterson in Africa mixes, it seemed like a while since he's really done anything closer to home, and closer to normal dance music trends. There was a lukewarm 2005 house mix for Mixmag magazine, but it's about time Gilles checks in with a superb outing of current house music. Disc 1 is full of funky vocal house and jazzed up selections, which Gilles seems to be an expert at selecting. The mixing runs smoothly, but the one down spot I found on this disc was the Sandy Rivera & Jose Burgos track This Will Change It, which features an incredibly long run of non-stop vocal repetition. At nearly 7 minutes of constant chorus, it really tempts you to hit the skip button. Other than that, this is a very solid house mix, and one of the best I've heard this year.
Disc 2 goes back to the past, with a mix consisting of nearly all 70's tracks. It's a lively jazz funk, soul, and disco mix, with some very interesting choices such as Space Bass by Slick, with it's futuristic lyrics, and the opener, We Gettin' Down, which quite possibly was the inspiration for A Tribe Called Quest's song Award Tour. There's also the well known Disco hit, Boogie Oogie Oogie by A Taste Of Honey.
Disc 3 is a collection of new, exclusive tracks commissioned by Gilles, which feature new house tracks with soulful male and female vocals. There really isn't a dull song on here. It features an interesting Carl Craig remix and a jazzed up Peterson edit of a Louie Vega track.
This 3 disc set well worth the asking price, as you're getting two superb mixes, one of new material, one of old, and one bonus collection of dozen new tracks. With 52 tracks and virtually no duds, this is a near perfect entry in the Defected In the House mix series.
Fantastic! March 21, 2008 The track selection is great on all CD's. First is a funky, soulful journey like house CD's used to be. Choice beats and rhythms. Second jazzy and laid back. Third unmixed but a pleasure to hear. Some Peterson fans may not like it as it's not his usual fare but most will love it.
Amazing March 15, 2008 Gilles is the best selector in the world and this collection is a pure joy to listen to. CD02 is the best of the bunch here.
Buy it quick!
Ignore the doubters, this is class! February 9, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'll keep this short.
GP knows his stuff whatever the genre and he also has the influence to get some exclusive tracks from those who matter. If you love House Music buy it for CD3 as there's some real quality unmixed tracks. If you love Black Music just buy it.
