Works on different levels February 6, 2005 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is an interesting album which works on a number of levels. It is an effective atmospheric latin-tinged accompaniment to a dinner party which will not provoke complaints from non-jazz fans. If more concentrated listening is your thing it contains enough quality jazz musianship to satisfy post-bop jazz enthusiasts. It will also appeal to younger listeners more accustomed to DJ manufactured jazz grooves and it is nice to drive to. I enjoy most types of jazz but prefer music that challenges me a bit. I tend to get bored quickly with stuff that lacks depth. I am still finding new things to enjoy in this album after a few months of listening. One or two tracks are a little on the pedestrian side but overall it is worth shelling out the cash for. I can understand why some reviewers have given it a low rating because it is more rooted in jazz traditions than his previous offerings so if your not a jazz fan and are not prepared to listen at more than a superficial level don't go here. Recommended to all others though.
Let's hope it's a grower January 14, 2005 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Being both a fan of classic, straight-ahead jazz (1940s-1970s) as well as a lot of contemporary nu-jazz, I must admit I was disappointed by this disc as well. I too thought the 'Bossa Per Due' tracks were excellent, groundbreaking and very interesting - but this new disc just does not hold my attention. There is something lacking. Because I have dug Conte's projects so much in the past, I keep giving it another spin hoping it will grow on me. We shall see, but the magic 8-ball has it's doubts.
Totally essential! December 8, 2004 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Sorry "Music Fan from London" but either you're an Elton John fan who thinks Katie Melua and Jamie Culham make good jazz or you need your ears syringing!! I've been into jazz for over 10 years and can safely say that this album is one of the best in my collection. It features some of Italy's best young musicians who play with breathtaking freshness, maturity and cool. A lot of Nicola Conte's stuff is of a bar/club leaning so it's great to hear him put out a jazz album of this quality.
blue note ? November 30, 2004 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
For those who loved Bossa per due for it's originality and freshness , don't buy this. It's more jazz , ok but not very good jazz. There's more vocals , ok but not very good vocals and the song in french is totally incomprehensible although it's a cover of the great Komeda and it was created by Christiane Legrand in such a nice way.I didn't find the "Blue note" on this record.
