| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review Recorded in January 2001, but only just released, Which Way Is East is a wonderful document of the complete empathy that master saxophonist Lloyd shared with the late and great drummer Billy Higgins. This empathy is as evident in five of the 24 pages of the beautifully illustrated booklet that accompanies this 2-CD release. These are devoted to a transcription of a conversation between Lloyd and Higgins, a conversation about matters musical and spiritual. The instrumentation credits show Lloyd to be playing, for example, tenor and alto saxophones and a variety of flutes, piano, Tibetan oboe and percussion, while Higgins complements his customary air-caressed fire on drums (a fire that once lit the Ornette Coleman quartet) with various poetic uses of, for example, guitar, guimbri, Syrian "one string", Senegalese, Guinean and Indian hand drums, and percussion. Both musicians also use their voices to wide-ranging and consistently arresting effect, Higgins contributing a wonderful piece of archetypal vocalising in a piece for guitar and voice entitled "Blues Tinge". With its flowing, shape-shifting blend of Afro-American and eastern spirituality, this heart-kissed album is one of the best jazz releases of the year. --Michael Tucker
