This is a magnificent quartet at the height of their powers. That Wheeler's brilliance is underrated is evidenced by the fact that he alone of this band has not been recognised with a ":rarum" compilation by ECM. However, while he might not be as prolific as others, his quality control is very high. Here, there is an almost symphonic sense of unity in the three tracks, notwithstanding their unequal length (22, 6 and 13 minutes respectively) with certain themes and devices echoing through the tracks. The music is intensely melodic and innovative as its ebbs and flows, the four instruments interweaving and then falling away in turn. De Johnette and Holland anchor the music in their unique ways, propelling it throughout its shifting tempos. It is a revelation hearing Jarrett in sideman role and beautifully and sympathetically he does so too. However, this is very much Kenny Wheeler's record, his crystal clear, beautiful, soulful and doleful flugelhorn stands out whilst giving the other instruments space to breathe. Although the album is consistently magnificent, the concluding Gnu Suite is the highlight. It is indeed a suite and best highlights the power and cohesion of Wheeler's writing and the improvisational force of all musicians whose explorations are never indulgent and always resolve into something melodically and harmonically satisfactory. The Touchstones reissues series is a clever way of acquiring some highlights of the last 40 years of jazz at competitive (ie download) prices. "Gnu High" should come high up in anyone's wish list.

A beautiful meeting between 4 great artists. Famously (still) Keith Jarretts last album under anyone elses name. Their styles of expansive but lyrical improving complement perfectly. A real classic in the ECM catalogue - I think the best group record Jarrett ever recorded
