A double CD collection of mid-1950s material, Birks' Works remembers the orchestra sponsored by the US State Department that Dizzy Gillespie took to the Near East and later to South America. It is hardly less momentous than his pioneering big band work of the 1940s, and it is even more polished, with superb solos and consistently classy arrangements. The album is also a glowing testament to Gillespie the jazz ambassador, thinker and organiser. And while all the music was recorded in Verve's studios, the ethos and overflowing excitement of the outfit's triumphant tours are nonetheless almost tangible. --Richard Palmer
