A Legendary Figure December 3, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ten of these fifteen tracks feature the legendary trumpet player Louis 'Shots' Madison. Madison (1899-1948) was placed in the same New Orleans Waif's Home as Louis Armstrong, around 1911 where he also learned to play in the Home's band. He made his first recordings with Oscar 'Papa' Celestin's New Orleans Jazz Orchestra in 1925. During the Depression years of the 1930's Madison worked mainly in brass bands for parades, funerals and other occasions. This was certainly where he developed his powerful, rich, brassy tone. Less inventive or dynamic than Armstrong, he was a strong middle range player. From the mid 1930's to early 1940's he was one of the three trumpeters in the Eureka Brass Band. Percy Humphrey, later leader of the band, said that the best trumpet team the band had was Dominique 'T-Boy' Remy as leader, with Madison and himself. For a day job, Madison worked for the New Orleans Board of Health, and at weekend evenings at local restaurants/dance halls. He died at the age of 49 following a stroke, and had made few recordings. Fortunately this CD is no doubt a very fair representation of his playing. The first two numbers 'High Society' and 'Gloryland' show his form as a parade style trumpeter. Equally at home with blues numbers, he is also relaxed and swinging in the middle paced ' When You and I were Young, Maggie'. The rest of the personnel (under George Lewis' leadership) comprised Baby Dodds (drums), Lawrence Marrero (banjo), Jim Robinson (trombone) and Alcide 'Slow Drag' Pavageau on bass. The last three tracks made on different dates have Bunk Johnson on trumpet Recorded at San Jacinto Hall, New Orleans, the quality for 1944 is excellent, and all the players can be heard. For this, the CD deserves a 5 star rating!
