this recording offers further proof that Bill Holman is the finest living arranger.His orchestra doesnt sound like Woody Hermans or Buddy Rich, It isnt meant to. This group is an arrangers group and gives his interpretation of the tunes. They are unique and priceless.

Bill Holman wrote and arranged for the fantastically powerful Buddy Rich band so I was looking forward to hearing him leading his own big band. It is nothing like the Rich organisation, and is rather 'bitty'. Your waiting for something to happen, but instead of something incisive, exciting or surprising you get another'bit', nicely executed, but hardly exciting. Of the "Hommage to Woody" I expected strong echoes of the Herman band but I don't think it was there, and the clarinet solos could have been better. It is a 'pleasant' album, but that is as far as it goes.
