| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review Although he has been much admired for his lush and romantic approach to the trombone, Lawrence Brown could get down in the gutter and play the blues with the best of them. By 1930 he had become a major influence and his style has been universally copied ever since. He was the first jazz musician to make use of a svelte tone on trombone. He spent 30 years in the Duke Ellington Orchestra and was a vital colour in Ellington's palette. Brown hated Ellington as a person because the leader forced him to play the "jungle"-style growl muting that was one of Ellington's trademarks. Brown claimed it destroyed his embouchure. A religious man, he also felt that Ellington was "an exploiter of men and a seducer of women". This 1955 album, one of only two under Brown's name, is a dazzling showcase of hot trombone. "Down The Street, Round The Corner Blues" is one of the classic trombone blues performances, whilst the elegant side of Brown is on display in well-chosen ballads like "Where Or When" and "Autumn In New York". A fine cast includes Jo Jones, Al Cohn, Louie Bellson and charts by Ralph Burns. --Steve Voce
