Outstanding interpretations March 19, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
AS AN AVID fan of musical theatre, I was expecting the Gershwin collection, as sung by Ella and Louis, to be a tour de force of varied jazz styles and supreme vocals: I was not disappointed. Along with sublime piano (courtesy Oscar Peterson) on many tracks and a strong brass section, Ella and Louis make "Our Love is Here Stay" a cornerstone of any respectable jazz collection. In particular "A Woman is a Sometime Thing", "A Foggy Day", "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off", the title track and of course the monumental "Summertime" stand out as exemplifiying the sort of quality music produced by these two jazz powerhouses. Buy it.
Ella and Louis sing Gershwin perfectly! December 21, 2001 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Most of Gershwin's most classic tunes are featured on this album and Ella and Louis do not fail to give them credit. Armstrong and Fitzgerald, two of the most legendary singers, perform Gershwin's music perfectly. Armstrong's famous husky tones and Ella's smooth voice combine to produce a gorgeous effect that rounds off the music nicely. This album could not fail to dissapoint Gershwin OR Ella and Louis fans. The dynamic duo and Jazz's greatest composer present an album which is rendered almost perfect - the only criticism being that there aren't enough tracks.
