Amazon.co.uk Review It's no surprise that Terry Callier's Alive is a live recording of a London appearance, released by a London label. Callier, a deeply soulful jazz guitarist and singer from Chicago who'd been recording since 1962, was virtually forgotten when, in 1991, he was contacted by London label Acid Jazz to license his "I Don't Want to See Myself (Without You)". The deal lead to Callier almost immediately becoming a star on the London live jazz/ soul/ hip-hop circuit, and eventually produced a major label deal with Polygram/Talkin' Loud. This beautifully recorded live album covers some of his earliest tracks, like 1972's brilliant "Ordinary Joe", which gets his set started in breathtaking fashion. From there Alive goes right up to work from Callier's Time Peace and Lifetime, including the cover of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready". The album closes with the 1983 self-financed track that originally sparked Acid Jazz's interest and led to an extra chapter in a story that looked likely to end far too soon. --Jake Barnes

Absolutely fantastic February 1, 2002 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I saw this on the listening post in a record store and though I'd give it a go. It was amazing and I bought it and have virtually all his other albums now. A great mix of jazz and soul with some folk influences thrown in. Basically, great music and an amazing voice!
an emotionally inspiring live performance July 5, 2001 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
i brought this album after seeing terry callier at the jazz café earlier this year. 'dancing girl' moved me to tears whilst making me dance too, 'sure gonna miss your candyman' had the whole place swinging. terry has such a phenomenal stage prescence yet is meek and kind with it and you can hear it in his performance. if you only every buy one terry callier album - make it "what colour is love" if you love it, buy this too!
