Great value introduction to a sublime talent September 2, 2007 One of the better Nina compilations. Great value at 21 tracks, over 70 minutes. A great plus point is that this compilation doesn't shy away from the more confrontational sides of Nina Simone's life, even opening with 'The Backlash Blues' a full blooded Civil Rights anthem and the song 'Why (The King of Love is dead') about the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King , is included. The excellent 'I wish I knew how it would to be Free',which one can interpret is an attack on Nixon's America or about a personal quest for liberation, is also on this CD. The more erotic sensual tracks that Nina could tackle so beautifully, 'I Want a Little Sugar In My Bowl', and 'Turn Me On' appear along with 'Do I move you?' a powerful lustful blues song, and are great. Two Bob Dylan numbers are wonderfully reworked ; a Gospel type version of 'I Shall Be Released' is sublime, and 'Just Like a Woman' is customised by Nina into the first person with great sensitivity accompanied by a string backing. 'Nobody's fault but mine' , ( Not the Led Zeppelin track of the same name !) is a forceful blues number with some excellent vocals. There are three live tracks at the end of this release, 'Ain't got no-I got Life' , from 'Hair', 'I Loves you Porgy', 'Gin House Blues'. are all fairly good. The only let down is a rather uninspired version of 'The Look of Love' which simply doesn't compare to Dusty Springfield's. But overall a great buy.

From the chilling tones of the title track to the uplifting beat of "I wish I knew..." this is every man's essential Nina Simone intro. All it will do is make you want to hear more and more. I couldn't stop playing it for about 2 weeks! Buy it. You will love it.
